Awesome bowling and excellent lower order runs from the BCs. Outstanding effort after having found out with the bat. To be fair we haven't batted all that well either or should I say Indian bowling has been equally good barring bowling to the tail. It's not like it's been one sided but the Indians just can't get runs. Honestly Shaw no chance in these conditions. He may hit few fours but that's about it. No one will be shaking to bowl to him in our conditions, in fact everyone will be queuing to bowl to him. The lad needs lot of work still to succeed in NZ, SA and England conditions. He can get out to innies, outies, short ball pretty much every thing. Surely India has better opener than Shaw for our conditions. Agarwal's first tour so you could excuse him. Even we are not putting 100 runs partnership for the first wicket on these decks. Good thing though is Shaw is young, he can improve heaps thanks to this tour but has his work cut out. Perhaps a county stint will help.

I thought Pujara and Rahane will put on a good fight but despite spending time in the middle runs just didn't come.

The bloke from the Indian set up was correct (can't name him in public forums, that would be wrong). Kohli was falling over.

Black Caps can't ask for a better bowling combination than this. Leaving out the spinner was proved correct. We lost lots of wickets today and if the tail didn't score as many as they did we will probably be looking down the barrel.

Treat to watch the bowlers from both sides today, particularly great to see Southee and Boult put in a vintage display. Game far from over though, Vihari Pant and noted NZ nemesis Jadeja quite capable of taking this lead into dangerous territory.

Much like a generation of Indian fans had to live through 81all out chasing 120 in Barbados 1997, NZ fans old enough to remember this test from 1993 will probably not relax just yet. Would back this lot to chase down a low total though :

Jamieson will obviously bowl in tougher conditions down the line but damn he’s been even better then I thought he’d be.

Young NZ players don’t get a lot of hype but I think a guy who is 6’8, bowls genuine out swing and can get it through at a decent pace (and I have no doubt he will get quicker) he looks like an excellent young cricketer, especially once you add in his more than handy batting ability.

Watching the highlight NZ's catching is really poor and Rahane looked like a duck in a shooting alley. Be very interesting to see how this turns out, if Jadeja can pull an innings out of his behind India are still well in it.

I guess NZ have to hope that the conditions turn in their favour tomorrow, or that the ball doesn't swing as much for India.

As has been said above, if India bowl like they did today, with a wee bit of luck, nerves, and injudicious stroke play, 150 could be a pretty hard target.
If it’s around 150 you just need one decent partnership and you’re virtually there. Suppose it depends on the conditions tomorrow when NZ bats again.

you'd have to think virat will be livid with himself for his performances in the series natch... the failures of his first england tour saw a real conscious effort to improve next time he went there, i wonder if that'll happen again

This has to be one of the worst green top pitches have seen in a while for batting
And yet 5 of 6 Indian wickets today fell to balls that didn't rely on seam movement from the "one of the worst green top pitches ... seen in a while" - 3 to Boult's swing, 2 to short balls.

Only 7 runs difference between the sides' first innings scores. Both teams bowling to the conditions brilliantly but still plenty of quality batting. Some superb catches. Not sure there's much to complain about, tbh.

Yep. But so far India haven’t had any in their second innings, so it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.

Plus, we basically got bowled out for 174 today. Again, not beyond the realms of possibility.

Possible but not likely. The damage was done with swing today, and I think the pitch will be pretty good for batting by tomorrow lunchtime. Imo India had their chance today and they blew it. If they’d managed to scrap their way to 100/3 then they would’ve been in prime position to win the test. As it is, anything under 250 in the final innings I think won’t be enough.

Shaw looked like the only batsman across both teams who could play some shots and put pressure back on the bowlers. Batted really well in the first innings. Vihari was also OK, but needed more luck.

He has a couple of glaring weaknesses, particularly against the short ball, but he's young enough to work on them, and his strokeplay looked awesome at times. I'm a believer now. :)

I do think that this summer has shown NZ has real problems in the batting department though. Taylor to me looks more and more like he’s trading on past glories. Nicholls has lost that ability to scrap his way to ugly scores. Latham still can’t hack it for long enough against pressure pace bowling. Really, they’re relying on KW to make a score way too much.

You’re forgetting Jamieson.:p
