NZME has decided not to renew the cricket rights for next season, so no more cricket on Radio Sport after this summer. Couldn’t reach an agreement with NZC.

PEWS should make a bot that reads out comments in the CW thread for a game/series on iheartradio or something to replace it.

Maybe I should drive to Waddle's house and keep changing the pooch.azureedge links for him on a big screen, and he can commentate from home on the most interesting of the Shield games that are taking place on any given day. It sounds like there'll no longer be any rights infringement to worry about with this. We can arrange for all the NZC video scorecards to be on a brief delay, so that only the very rare individual (someone actually at the ground) can take issue with us about not being truly live.

Waddle is involved in this venture just for the invaluable voice recognition and name recognition, so that we'd garner a much higher quality to our donations received (the rural landowners, the 50+ business executives, etc.) . I'll be feeding some notes to him on the backgrounds and pedigrees of all the new players as they make their debuts.

That's sad. There's a whole generation of 50+ ers who use this medium exclusively for their cricket coverage.

Only a guess but I imagine NZME saw no financial value in it and went in ultra low ball, not particularly caring about the fabric of our summer code and the fact that it's been an institution on radio. I'm certain NZC wanted it to continue.

I listen to Radio Sport frequently with Test cricket, ODIs if I'm in the car etc. So it's a bad result

To be clear, NZC has stated they're committed to having cricket on the radio, and they're still in negotiations with other potential partners.

Sounds like that’s what happened from the article on stuff.

Might end up a positive if a new station takes over and ends up covering some more domestic games.

That sux, Not a fan of coney- think he tries too hard and his constant praise/stories of the 80's NZ team is pretty annoying. but Brian Waddle is my Fav commentator ever. Quite easily. Will be sad

Haha, couldn't disagree more. Waddle might've been not too bad once upon a time, but I've come to find his biased whinging in recent seasons completely insufferable. Time he called it a day.

Listening to the test on the radio while pottering around in the shed is a NZ institution. Or maybe that generation is dying out.

Speaking of, Waddle is a whinging old baby boomer and it’s time he was put out to pasture.

The Radio Sport thing is really sad news. Grew up when ALL they had was cricket commentary (and Bowls and Tennis actually too). Sports Roundup it was called then. When none of that was on, the station wasn’t on either. And commentary of domestic cricket too. Remember listening to a List A game with my Dad between ND and Wgtn. Robbie Hart got ND home in the end.

Found it! 1997. Styris opening the bowling and batting at 10.
