Here are Dhoni's series wise averages in Australia:

Batting records | One-Day Internationals | Cricinfo Statsguru | ESPNcricinfo.com

Don't think there was a hole. Before the last series he averaged 40.xx. After that series he averaged 47.xx
They were tri series so they include some extra innings against other sides. Against Australia he averaged 35 before the last series with 2 fifties. That final series he scored 3 half centuries out of three innings and was dismissed once.

Here is his complete record against Australia in Australia. Even his good series early on were not as good as the averages made him look (striking in the 60s and with a top score of 37 in the first of those series).

This could be said of other players as well.

For instance, Bevan's highest score in Pakistan is 83. He averaged 88 there. His highest score in WI is 72, but he averaged 73 there.

Getting into the lolsamplesize territory. Suffice to say Dhoni was not good outside Asia is a massive fallacy.

Bevan's average in Sri Lanka against Sri Lanka is 30 @ 68. ATG player? Nah . . . incomplete record. And it is highly significant, because SL was the top non Australian side for a significant period of his career.

Thought to bring this up since Dhoni's quite a good record in Australia is scrutinized.

Symonds averages 61 with the ball in India. He played 22 matches as well. Was a bit of a Bangladesh and Netherlands basher though. Averaged 3 and 12.5 respectively with the ball in these countries. Sample size - 2 wickets each

But then, nobody is saying these bowlers to be included in ATG 1st XI except for Klusener who was a gun ODI all rounder (averaging under 30 with the ball and over 40 with the bat).

Waqar and Lee are in the mix for 2nd or 3rd ATG ODI XI just like Symonds.
The point is (sigh) Symonds is being selected (perhaps) as a fifth bowler. You, and others, are saying "he's not good enough, he'd get spanked at this ATG level".

Yet over his career, his bowling ER compared with frontline bowlers who might be considered 2nd XI.

Who said that?

I said the biggest hole in his record was corrected and that hole was specifically against Australia in Australia.

All his part time pie chucker colleagues have similar economy rates. How does this make Symonds a better bowler?

Sanath - 4.8
Ganguly - 5.06
Sachin - 5.1
Viv - 4.5
Yuvraj - 5.1
Collingwood - 5

Time for me to throw down another ATG team, this time it's good ole NZ.

Martin Guptill
Glenn Turner
Kane Williamson
Ross Taylor
Martin Crowe
Brendon McCullum+
Chris Cairns
Richard Hadlee
Daniel Vettori
Shane Bond
Trent Boult

Unlucky: Roger Twose, Steve Fleming, Nathan Astle, Chris Harris, Scott Styris, Jacob Oram, Kyle Mills

Lots of options for most spots here. Some people might not like the selection of Turner, howver, it can't be forgotten that he was one of the pioneering ODI openers who absolutely smashed it back in the 70's. Batting is very strong, especially in the middle order, with a lot of depth to go with it. Vettori was an auto-selection, & I feel the pace bowlers I have chosen are all top-notch with each of them offering something different. On a greentop with overcast conditions I'd be tempted to slip in Chris Harris to bowl 10 overs for near nothing & hit up a cheeky 20.

I'd say the opposite for Chris Harris and chuck him in for slow/low conditions ahead of Cairns. Definitely would rather face Harris on a greentop than those other guys.

That's a big call, especially considering Harris' finest hour was arguably during the '99 WC when he proved to be near-unplayable on those seaming English wickets. Both men were outstanding fielders though.
