I have mentioned in the other thread but mention here again if Conway is selected for the World cup it could be a hit and miss for him. Going from domestic with not even NZ A games behind may turn out a disaster. Particularly in Australia as well batting at the top of the inning. If I really want him to succeed I'd rather have him start at home vs West Indies and Pakistan. Don't want to nip away at the bud what promises to be a good 5-6 years of cricket from Conway. For short term success we may lose out on him in the long run.

Madness to blame Taylor imo, he didn’t have much choice once Seifert got out except to see off Bumrah and take it as deep as possible. Low odds when you reach that stage no matter what you do.

That looks really good to me, except I’m pretty much over Guptill. He’s far too hit or miss these days, and the hits are getting further and further apart. Think I’d keep Munro in his spot.

At this stage the tournament is not looking promising anyway, so why not give him the experience. Even if he only plays one or two games ... he’s not a kid that is going to get mentally scarred by it.

NZ's T20 batting problems might have seemed novel this series, but if you squint it's the exact same situation as the ODI side leading into the world cup. Lots of top-order batsmen and no finishers.

Finishers' job is to a) be willing and able to hit from ball one (Klusener etc), and b) know how to pace an innings, marshal a chase, when to nurdle and find 2s and when to hit big (Dhoni, Chris Harris, McCullum back when he batted 7).

In the ODI side we eventually settled on Neesham (yes to (a), getting better at (b)) with a side serve of CDG (yes to (a) as long as bowling isn't top tier, no to (b)) and a little help from Santner (hit and miss, shouldn't bat above 8). That was the best we could do because while not great, everyone else we tried ****ing sucked at finishing innings.

… and that's still the case in T20s, the newly recruited players for 5/6/7/8 haven't played the innings we need. But it's even worse in T20s because with the shorter innings you need even more players with these skills e.g. it's far more critical that your number 5 can do this in T20 than in ODIs.

Part of the problem afaics is that domestically, any young talented batsmen, including wk-batsmen who in times gone by would bat 6 or 7 and learn to play this role, now bat top 4 instead.

Tickner has probably the most potential of any of our young bowlers imo - mainly for test cricket but possibly limited overs too.

He's a fair way off recognising that potential currently though.

I came in to post a similar squad but wouldn't dismiss Mitchell or Bruce just yet. Mitchell has a good head at times as seen in the England test, just think he needs a bit more consistent exposure in the game.

Sodhi should be a first choice pick tbh, better bowler than Santner and some of the fringe seamers, plus not a mug with the bat.

WC XI
1. Guptill
2. Conway
3. Williamson
4. Seifert+
5. Taylor
6. Neesham
7. Santner
8. Sodhi
9. Ferguson
10. Boult
11. Bennett

Post WC, I think some of the team should concentrate on Tests and ODIs or Tests only:

1. Conway
2. Seifert+
3. Phillips
4. Bruce
5. Chapman
6. Mitchell
7. Santner
8. Sodhi
9. Ferguson
10. Tickner
11. Bennett

Not Terrible
Also it's worth considering that there is a 2021 T20 world cup because the champion's trophy doesn't exist anymore and the ICC couldn't think of anything new or interesting.

I'd like some T20s to be without Guptill or Munro.

1. Seifert +
2. Phillips
3. Williamson
4. Chapman
5. Taylor
6. Mitchell
7. Neesham
8. Santner
9. Sodhi
10. Boult
11. Ferguson

Conway for Chapman in September. Not WC just a thought. My WC squad ATM:

1. Seifert +
2. Conway
3. Williamson
4. Taylor
5. de Grandhomme
6. Mitchell
7. Neesham
8. Santner
9. Sodhi
10. Boult
11. Ferguson

12. Munro
13. Southee
14. Phillips
15. Bennett

Some tough decisions. Tried to go heavy on finishers so we can start slogging asap. All really on form this.

Well I said after we lost game 3, I hope we lose 5-0 to give everyone a wake up call.

I have seen nothing about Bruce, Kuggs, Southee, Mitchell to suggest they should even be in the squad let alone suitable for international cricket. Maybe Guptill/Munro to a lesser extent, although Munro managed to get some luck runs imo. Santner had moments of brilliance (especially in the field) but a bit too hit and miss as a wicket taking option.

CdG has had a bad run, but still think he can come good especially after back to back match winning performances in Sri Lanka and also a couple of good scores in the England series. Just don't understand why he didn't play the whole series to allow himself back into form. Bruce wasn't even in the top 10 run scorers of the Super Smash this season. A couple of years ago before the T20 Tri series with Aus/NZ/Eng, Aus basically picked their squad based on BBL form, we need to do this as well.

Seifert has to be at the top. Neesham not even getting a look in is criminal. Bennett came good.

The T20 series against Australia I would like to see this XI:

1. Guptill/Munro
2. Seifert (wk)
3. KW
4. CdG
5. Taylor
6. Neesham
7. Santner
8. Sodhi
9. Ferguson
10. Boult
11. Bennett

Looking ahead to the WC, you have to imagine Conway is in the mix and maybe Phillips. I assume they'll take some fringe players to Scotland/Ireland etc. There'll be a few T20 games Conway is eligible for before the WC which is good.

Ideal WC squad.

1. Conway
2. Seifert (wk)
3. KW
4. CdG
5. Taylor
6. Neesham
7. Santner
8. Sodhi
9. Ferguson
10. Boult
11. Bennett

Phillips, Guptill/Munro, Tickner, Jamieson.

Although reading this back, I'd wager that this might more than likely be the 2021 T20 WC squad rather than this years.

Ugh please don't remind me that there are two in a row. I don't mind the actual tournament, but the amount of T20Is lately that have been justified by "but there's a T20 WC soon!" has driven me crazy. It's always a sad moment when I remember it won't end after this year's tournament.

I think it's because they wanted the stagger them two years apart from the ODI WCs, but the 2020 was already scheduled so instead of moving it they just added another one. So from 2021 onwards we'll have:

2021: 20 over WC
2023: 50 over WC
2025: 20 over WC
2027: 50 over WC

etc

I'm sure they'll find new and exciting ways to have another twenty or thirty T20 World Cups in that time though.

Its sad about Anderson and Milne. They've disappeared off the face of the earth. Really hope they do come back because we could use them. I don't follow their social medias but is there anything to suggest that they are making a push for the BC's or getting back to full fitness? Didn't anderson play some domestic this season?
