Kohli is already no.7 on most number of matches spent above 900 ratings points in test matches. Only thing that stops him from remaining ATG is massive decline in form or suddenly a weakness develops in his technique ( so longevity)
I agree and those things cannot be taken for granted.

Probably. Somewhere between a bit and somewhat but less than a lot or substantially.

As I said earlier, Smith has been averaging pretty much bang on 50 for the last 6 years or so. Kohli has been averaging 60 in the same time. Smith has had at least one great World Cup final performance which makes up some of the difference though. Even going by averages, that's 20% which is a bit. Quite a bit actually.
Kohli averages 68 since 2014, Smith 46

And what is this massive obsession with WC records? Nobody claims Dravid is close to Bevan despite him having much superior WC record iirc. Dravid was top scorer in 1999 WC and had a decent 2003 WC.

There's no point comparing them lol. Kohli has literally 5 times as many hundreds as Smith in ODIs. I mean, come on.

Warner and Finch are better than Smith and even they aren't comparable to Kohli.
Really, Finch is better than Smith? So say Finch and Smith have a mixup (what are the chances) while both on say 8* off 12. They are both stranded, you are throwing it to Finch's end?

I dont agree in ODIs. Id go Warner - Smith - Finch. It is close though.

How do you find that stat? Can find this out for ODIs for Smith and Kohli -- time spent above 900 points and time spent above 800 points.

The basic idea is that Kohli is the #2 test batsman in the world, Smith is not in the top 10 ODI batsman. The gap between them in ODIs is a lot more than the gap between them in tests even though there's a sizable gap in tests themselves.
He could be in the top 5 though. Apart from Kohli, Rohit, Warner, and Buttler, I don't think there are many batsmen inarguably better than Smith.

Smith had been pretty mediocre in ODIs for one or two years before this summer/series tbh. That might be colouring perceptions a tad, 48 @ 87 is surely nothing to sneeze at.

Kohli is just utterly transcendent in this format, there's not much point comparing anyone except maybe peak ABdV to him in this decade.

I have old ICC data . I posted on ATG thread. This was confirmed by Andrew. Smith topped the list in test and Kohli was no.7 in test iirc.

Regarding ODI , Smith peak ratings is 752 whereas Kohli has spent every ODI from 2013/2014 above 800 ratings point. Andrew can confirm the data . He might have dropped have dropped 1 or 2 matches below 800 ratings point . But he has spent atleast 50 % of his career above 800 ratings point

I'm finding it more and more difficult to draw anything of value from odi stats tbh. So many players are putting up numbers that would've made them shoo-ins for an all time xi 15 years ago.

Yeah, comparing contempary ODI players is still meaningful (although as ever it's always worth looking beyond just average and SR) but you basically can't draw conclusions when comparing between this generation and the previous one.

Which is fine tbh, wanting to compare across eras and all-time teams will be a thing of course, but a player's value to a team comes when they play, not if they'd played ten years earlier or later

Use ICC ratings to compare players. It takes into account percentage of runs scored of team total, quality of opposition and SR in ODI. Only drawback is it cannot differentiate between home and away performance

Home - Away doesn't really matter much anymore in ODIs though - does it.
