Wut if the target is 21?
Well you’d hope your strike bowler nips the last wicket out before the spud bowler from the other end leaks runs

Cricket isn’t played on paper, which bowler to pick in the hypothetical logan mentioned isn’t clear cut at all imo.

High average - low SR bowlers make for fun games. Quick runs, quick wickets.

Shami: Avg 27, SR 49
Simon Jones: Avg 28, SR 47
Roach: Avg 27, SR 51
Johnson: Avg 28, SR 51
Thommo: Avg 28, SR 52

Terrible post by me originally but now you're using Steyn's contemporaries relative incompetency against Marshall? Steyn has arguably got better stats (yes, I will abide by PEWS' signature now) than Marshall but that does not mean it is a flat-out certainty that they are around or at least equals, as you often seem to suggest.
Wait, are you saying Steyn isn’t up there with Marshall or did I misread something?

My current XI. Cummins and Labuschagne could force their way in though.

Think my only change would be possibly Ponting over Chappell.
Ponting really should be a part of the Australian ATG side but there are far too many players who were better down the order and competition for number 3 is impossible to crack. One option is for him to open. I think he could bat 5 but displacing Chappell/Waugh/Border there is hard.

Pretty much my side. Cummins looks to take Davidson's place, though the left arm variety and solid batting are hard to displace.

Is there a better middle order selection to choose from than Aus?
Smith
Bradman
Chappell
Waugh
Clarke
Border
Ponting

Edit: Anyone I've forgotten? The other Chappell/Waugh at a push - doesn't even really get a look in. It's such a ridiculously strong pool of players.

Is there anything that even remotely competes? Maybe India? Nowhere near as good though IMO though some great players in there...

Sachin
Kohli
Dravid
Laxman
Pujara
Ganguly (?)
Azhar (if we start counting cheaters...good batsman though I suppose)

Seems like a huge step down apart from maybe the first 2-3 players.

Clem Hill and Niel Harvey deserve a mention.

Australia’s got the middle order, England’s got the openers, best overall bowling is a bit tougher.

Windies middle order is probably 2nd best, quite close actually, and SA 3rd.

Taking out Bradman it's still pretty close.

Ponting
Smith
Chappell
Border

Vs

Lara
Viv
Headley
Sobers

Lara and Ponting are very close, Sobers and Smith are very close, Chappell and Viv pretty close. Headley with the reputation but Border with the career. Very, very close, probably tilting just a fraction to the West Indies but you wouldn't bet against Australia.

I think without Bradman it tilts in favor of the WI, but as you said, close.

Openers.
England: Hobbs, Hutton

Middle order
Australia: Bradman, Smith, Ponting

All rounder
West Indies: Sobers

Wicket keep / spinner
Australia: Gilchrist, Warne

Fast bowlers
West Indies: Marshall, Ambrose, Garner

West Indies middle order and South Africa pace attack both are very close.

Whatever it takes!!!
If we take 1-3 as top order, it does become an interesting tussle even with Bradman there, between England and Australia. And Windies win middle order easily.
