Yeah, and I was looking at it as I was typing. Just the mood I was in as I was doing it. KP over Compton for that extra flair the batting lineup is missing. Neither Larwood nor Anderson are elite options unless Anderson has helpful conditions.B-but your signature says Compton and Larwood.
McGrathOn a different note, not thinking about XI’s or rankings or counting #batdeep into any equation, what would you guys see as being your ideal 3 or 4 man pace attack? Just something I’ve been wondering about after seeing Wasim in so many experts greatest XI’s.
Those are the best two attacks (more or less) and both have good to good enough no. 8's (Wasim and Akram).McGrath
Marshall
Wasim
McGrath and Marshall are marginally ahead of all others, and they contrast each other perfectly: McGrath's height and bounce in the corridor vs the shorter Marshall's skid up into the body. Both are know for their toughness and durability. Ability to bowl long spells and not leak runs.
Wasim as the guy who can bowl really well with both the new ball and the old ball, get reverse etc etc. Also the left arm variety is really important, imo.
If those guys were gone, my next three choices would be Steyn, Hadlee and Ambrose.
That is one condition that wouldn't be repeated. And we have no idea how Sutcliffe would produce under the modern lbw law.Hobbs

While I don’t consider Wasim one of the 3 greatest pacers of all time, I believe he’s the best compliment to Marshall and McGrath with his swing. Sutcliffe could be replaced by Hutton or Gavaskar and the team would lose very little. I want to wait until Smith’s career is over, or nearly over, before putting him in the side, but he’s definitely a strong candidate. If we go back and play on some uncovered pitches too we’ve got 3 of the absolute best to do it on a sticky.
In a hypothetical match we can play wherever and whenever we want. Great players have always been able to adapt, Bradman and Hammond certainly did to the lbw law changes, as I’m sure Hobbs and Sutcliffe would. Sutcliffe was still a very productive player in domestic cricket despite being 41+, and in fact in the first year the changes were implemented in the county game, his average actually rose. That is one condition that wouldn't be repeated. And we have no idea how Sutcliffe would produce under the modern lbw law.
Genuine question though. As a whole package; batting, bowling, slip fielding. Who is the better between Kallis or Hammond? Still liking the idea of batting Sobers at 5 behind Smith / Tendulkar / Richards and using either of the two above at 6. Kallis for sure has to hold the edge on the bowling department, of no where else.
