Sounds right to me. England's promising position on Day 1 was somewhat flattering as they hadn't actually bowled that well, and QDK was good enough to ride his luck and cash in.

I also think that parrtnership between Nortje and RVD helped a lot

England did most things wrong from the moment they won the toss. Even though the game was pretty much gone early they still bowled with supreme stupidity after almost sneaking back into it with four down in the SA second innings.

Shouldn't get too carried away with England bashing though. It should be remembered that South Africa have been struggling and they showed the right determination on the couple of occasions they were under pressure.

I suppose "one day shots" may be over-simplifying it a bit. What I mean is shots that don't need to be played when there is plenty of tine in a test innings to just let some deliveries go through to the keeper. Wafting at deliveries outside the off stump has become a bit of a habit with some of our supposedly better batsmen.

tbh I didn't watch any of it, so I'm relying on the online commentaries. I guess that most dismissals will to some extent, involve an error in judgement or execution by the batsman. Against that, they are also out there to score some runs and there shouldn't be many freebies at this level. I'd be more critical if they had nicked off or holed out when their job had been to bat out Day 5 to save the match, but that wasn't the situation yesterday. I gather that Bairstow's dismissal wasn't great, but we all know he's completely out of sorts and shouldn't be there anyway. Maybe they should have done what you said against the 2nd new ball and look to cash in later.

Buttler's shot did actually annoy me a bit tbh. I'm not going to single him out as he's hardly the only culprit over the last god-knows-how-long, but the impression I get is that once a game is beyond us some players sometimes see that as a reason to not bother playing properly, maybe to 'have a bit of fun'. I don't expect us to win, or even get particularly close, from the position we were in when Buttler was the only batsman left, but it would be nice to see an effort to at least make the opposition work a bit to finish things off.

I know I said earlier in the thread that Archer might as well just slog, but everyone else in the side (except maybe Broad these days) should be at least capable of trying to block for a bit

No Buttler was free to do as he pleased. Was the only way to get runs on the board. No one was slagging off stokes for reverse sweeping for 6 off Cummins when in a similar position

Stokes was somewhat more played-in by that point though, having faced nearly 200 balls as opposed to Buttler's 30-odd. I'd have been saying the same as I am now about Buttler if Stokes had gone 6 and out just after Leach had arrived at the crease. And FWIW, whilst I ws obviously thrilled that he scooped Cummins for 6, at the time I hoped he didn't try to repeat the shot since I thought it had a good chance of going wrong.

I don't so much mind that Buttler decided to play more aggressively, but the shot he got out to was a filty wipe across the line. "Controlled aggression" is a phrase that's too often used after the fact, but it's possible to be a bit selective about how and when you try to smash a boundary. It didn't feel like he was going "well, if I capitalise of some scoring opportunities I can get us closer", more "well **** it, lets just have a dash and hope it comes off". The fact that Stokes pulled off a one-in-a-thousand chase with that mindset shouldn't mean it's our default approach whenever the scorecards look similar.

I dont want to post a link because its written by Who Shall Not Be Named, but I think Bavuma has been dropped and sent back to franchise cricket to give Rassie a decent go
