DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

They definitely got complacent in that 2nd innings in Adelaide. They never believed they were in any trouble and they all played a bunch of loose shots, and before they knew it, they were 8 down and hardly 200 ahead. Agarkar's 6-fer was one of the least impressive match winning spells you'll ever see in terms of quality of bowling haha.
The Ponting dismissal in the second innings epitomized it. Short and wide outside off stump, cut straight to gully.

I'd rate Waugh marginally higher than Dravid but it's definitely not crazy to have dravid a bit higher imo. Best player of the moving ball I've ever seen.

Was a great catch by Akash Chopra though, if I recall correctly.

Also,, a nice lil personal anecdote... I had just got down the stairs from my house to catch the bus for college when my cousins came running out to tell Ponting was dismiissed. Cue a sick call to college and one of the greatest days of cricket watching in my life. :)

Ah memories. I was living in New York at the time of the Adelaide test. I ditched a dinner with my girlfriend (now wife) to go to the one bar showing the cricket (an Aussie bar, Eight Mile Creek) and watch the second innings. Until Dravid was there until the end, I was convinced India would collapse, such was my trauma from being a 1990s India fan.

Yeah I had thought Dravid would edge ahead of Kohli. Think the latter will be next.

Also, Dravid has got no. 18 twice in a row despite the likes of Smith and Kohli coming in. Interesting.

Actually, I wouldn't be too surprised if Gavaskar, Richards, or Lara came next as well. Expecting Weekes a top 15 place.

Don’t think Dravid > Waugh at all.

Am I overrating Waugh? Along with Sachin and Lara he was the best bat of the 90s.
No you are not over rating Waugh. He was at his best when bowling was toughest and was a huge part of the reason Australia became Australia in the 00s.

Dravid’s performance against and in the two top teams of his generation(Aus and SA) were mediocre. I am not surprised with Kohli being ahead of Dravid. Kohli has been remarkable as the second best Test batsman of his generation.

Unpopular opinion : Despite not achieving the individual peaks that Lara achieved, Steve Waugh was as good as Brian Lara in the 1990s. For me, Steve Waugh was better than Rahul Dravid. Toughest batsman I have seen along with Andy Flower in the last 25 years of cricket.

No.17

Virat Kohli (India) 832

Quality Points: 780
Career Points: 52

Career/Runs: 2011-present, 7202 (rank 74)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 52.01 (54.98) 48.32 (51.08) 52.56 (57.81) (rank 14)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (2016-2018): 67.30 61.91 55.84 (rank 9)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 45.23 44.11 50.49 (rank 44)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 49.97 46.71 52.77 (rank 21)

Virat Kohli finished 2019 as the no.1 ranked test batsman in the world according to the ICC ratings and he is currently placed at no.17 in this analysis. There can be little doubt that Kohli is at or near his peak as a test batsman after having a somewhat checkered beginning, averaging 39.00 (39.89) in his first 50 innings. He has since answered a lot of questions about his ability, having scored a mountain of runs in England in 2018 and being instrumental to India's first series win in Australia. He is confrontational, confident and captivating in a way that none of his great Indian batting predecessors were and that may hinder some people from truly accepting him as the real deal. The next few years will be telling and will dictate where Kohli is finally placed in the reckoning of great test batsmen. He currently is very much in the conversation.

He was as good as both Lara and Tendulkar afaic. Waugh's performances vs Pakistan, South Africa and West Indies usurp most anything Lara and Sachin did vs the above teams (with their atg attacks).

Tendulkar's performance against peak Steyn in 2010 both home and away are above anything I've seen from almost any batsman.

Stop over rating Steve Waugh. The guy has total 4 centuries and averages 43 in Asia. He averages 16 in SL.
