DoG's Top 100 Test Batsmen Countdown Thread

Just because someone else picks up the slack doesnt give you a pass for not making runs surely? In the last two you mentioned especially, Australia were in big trouble
Yeah, this is like saying Kohli wasn't needed to score against AUS in 2017 because Pujara and Rahul made runs.

Also think that Waugh would have been let down on his quality opposition runs per innings of 38. His early period (1985-90) would have hurt him there.

International Captain
No.18

Rahul Dravid (India) 825

Quality Points: 727
Career Points: 98

Career/Runs: 1996-2012, 13265 (rank 4)

Overall average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 49.00 (52.63) 43.48 (46.71) 39.49 (42.54) (rank 39)
50 Innings Peak Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate (2002-2006): 68.80 57.79 42.41 (rank 18)
Non-Home Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 49.85 43.47 39.25 (rank 34)
Quality Opposition Average/Runs per innings/Strike-rate: 45.11 40.82 39.49 (rank 69)

"The Wall" makes his appearance. Like Waugh and Chanderpaul immediately below him, Rahul Dravid's career is notable for its length, weight of runs (he scored a century in 10 test playing nations), crease occupancy in times of need and great peak period. His 13000 runs and higher RPI is what lifts him just above Waugh and Chanderpaul, due mainly to batting at no.3 as opposed to no.5 or no.6. What is not so memorable is that almost immediately after his peak Dravid had the lowest 50 innings trough of any batsman in the top 100 that I have noted, averaging a meager 28.93 (30.26) from 2006 to 2008. To his immense credit, he fought back, averaging 53.45 (58.00) from 2009 to 2011. This included his heroic performances in England in 2011 in a 0-4 whitewash. But that was the last great hurrah, and he retired after a poor tour to Australia. His place at no.3 has been taken up admirably by Cheteshwar Pujara but in Indian hearts there will only ever be one great "wall".

Absolute monster batsman. I had so much time to watch Dravid (which is lucky coz he took his time). But he was the wall and really deserves his place here. Definitely one of the most admirable batsmen for me since the days of Border (along with Chanders and Kallis) in the price they put on their wicket.

Whatever it takes!!!
Amazing player, amazing person... Will forever hold a special place in the hearts of true Indian cricket lovers for unselfishly choosing to take the less glamorous and public role of coaching the pipeline for the international side.

Had to open at times when he was clearly in shite form, had to keep wickets after batting a day and a half at Kolkata, declared Sachin in the 190s. What a guy.

Still not convinced it was Dravid's call alone. I remember seeing Sourav right next to him for like 30 mins and just as he was about to give signal for declaration,, he left the seat, like the over before.

All of Steve waugh, Dravid and Chanderpaul are getting slightly over rated in this ratings due to various reasons. Hope they come soon . None of them deserve top 15 positions imo. Kohli should be next.

I don't remember him having to keep in Kolkata. Didn't we have Sameer Dighe or someone? Literally the only thing I can remember about his career was him helping to push us over the line in Chennai.

People will say it was against a weak attack blah blah but Adelaide 2003 was probably the best and most important individual performance by an Indian batsman overseas in my lifetime. Heroic stuff.

Mongia got hit in the face by a Harbhajan delivery so he had to go off the field for a few hours.
