Does Ahktar even make the Pak XI?

Anwar
Hanif
Younis
MoYo
Miandad
Inzy
Imran*
Bari+
Wasim
Saqlain/Qadir
Waqar

Would be better than getting rid of a batsman for Ahktar surely? (im sure ive got the middle order in the wrong batting order too)
I'd get rid of a batsman (MoYo for sure) for Mustaq Mohammad tbh.

Taking the advantage of having Imran to cyncially score extra runs in the lower order seems like a waste to me, especially since my team would still have the Imran-Bari-Wasim 7-9 anyway.

Shoaib Akhtar is underrated. Induced an element of fear in batsmen and he was a great wicket taking bowler. If he played for another country with a decent mentor, he would have become a legend.

One issue with a Pakistani ATG XI is that the automatic choice wk (Bari) has a tail enderish kind of record with the bat(not doubting his quality with the gloves btw). This forces one to shore up more batting in that lineup which isn't a bad idea imho.

Fazal Mahmood over Akhtar. Cricinfo's Pakistan all time XI had Fazal in addition to Imran, Wasim, Waqar and Qadir.

Mm I still feel with Bari you’re better off stuffing the middle order and just having Imran Wasim Waqar and a spinner

Maybe it's just because I rate Mushtaq higher than others, but having Bari at 9 and *still* having five bowlers seems like the best of both worlds to me. Pick Saqlain and your attack is the three gun quicks, an offie and a leggie.

SA : Steyn, Donald, Pollock and Rabada

Pak : Imran, Wasim, Waqar and Akhtar

WI : Marshall, Ambrose, Garner and Holding/Roberts.
RSA and WIs field an extra quick as batsmen. This makes their pace attacks better rounded in a more clear way than a man to man comparison

Surely Saqlain over Qadir

I know we love leggies but the difference in their records is massive. Also Saqi should get points for innovation due to possessing an actual legal doosra(absent of controversy)

While I don't think Akhtar makes the Pak ATG xi, put me in the Shoaib is underrated camp too. It's pretty remarkable that he was able to bowl as quick as he did without completely breaking down. Express quicks usually need to change their style and dial it back a bit if they want to last longer. He was always picking up small injuries but he had a much longer career than he had any right to. Best ever bowler in the true consistently express pace category imo.

Played only 40 odd tests over 12 years or so of international cricket. So I don't know about without breaking down part.

Double what Bond and Tyson managed

And about as much as Thommo but with a way better record

I assume Brett Lee either counts in the slowed down category or just clearly not as good

I can never forget that match in Kolkata and the crowd reaction. Shoaib bowled Dravid with a yorker and the crowd gave a loud roar in anticipation for Sachin’s arrival. The noise was almost deafening during Shoaib’s run up to Sachin. In a second, there was absolute silence from the crowd and a loud roar from Shoaib as he clean bowed Sachin for a duck with a vicious yorker.

Kane Williamson has a sub-40 average in SL, SA, Eng and India. Looking at the way he is playing this series, he will have a sub-40 average in Aus too.

Joe Root has a sub-40 average in SL, NZ and Aus.

Steven Smith has a 40+ average in all countries except Bangladesh where has played just 2 Tests.

Virat Kohli has a sub-40 average in WI and Eng. Also in Bangladesh where he played just 1 Test.

I wonder if in the future that will be held against him (assuming here he never goes to England again and maintains his average - let's say injury reasons). Because it shouldn't be, and that's why context is so important.
Yes he had an absolute horror show of a series the first time out, but then he more than made up for it. The fact that his first series was so, so, so bad is why he STILL has a sub-40 average.
