It's gone largely unnoticed, but Nicholls is having a very poor summer. Made 50 odd in one innings vs England, and absolutely nothing else.

Biggest disappointment is NZs amateur prep. Hard to give too many shots really.

Think the prep thing is a furphy - we just played test cricket against England. Sure the conditions are different in Australia but you can't expect to go from one place to another and get to play in exactly the same conditions before each match. Perth was an ambush with the pink ball and having to bowl first, but that would've been the case regardless.

These conditions in Melbourne are still good for batting, if you can survive the new ball and the fact that Australia are on a roll.

Could be he's just reverted to mean. He may have had a remarkably lucky/in form start to his career, much like Adam Voges. Except when Voges was in unusual form he averaged 80 and when Nicholls is in unusual form he averages 40

Surprisingly acceptable MCG test match wicket IMO. Just enough in it for the bowlers but clearly runs there if you play well. Still a bit slow and sub-optimal for strokeplay but a vast improvement on anything else that's been served up in the last 5 years. Looks like there should be a fair bit of turn there too.

NZ also drew 1-1 in Sri Lanka. Some other teams haven't gone so well in recent tours.

NZ ranking also helped by the lack of tours to the other top 5 countries.
