The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Seriously hb is saying a side with Symonds is terrible and you're saying a side with Jaddu is not bad. I like to side against Aus oh so much but I'm finding it very hard now.
I don’t know why you think I’m averse to tipping a bucket of **** on Australian players.

I’m an equal opportunity ****-tipper mate.

To an unconsiously biased person, someone with an un-biased view will be perceived as having a bias

this isn't aimed at anyone in particular ftr

Whatever it takes!!!
The sheer vitriol you continually pour on Aust players is what is now reaching ridiculous levels, mate.

What is actually reaching ridiculous levels is your posting on such topics. My argument has been stated with all the facts that it is based on. You can always select Symonds in your own XI but to call him an ATG in the ODI format is well, just ridiculous.

So you wouldn't drop Symonds down the order to bat at 6 in a pretend ODI team, but you'll promote Amla to open in a pretend test XI in spite of the fact he only opened in 1 innings in the whole decade. And the guy you'd leave out in favour of Amla is Warner. Okay.

Jeez... like its that difficult to figure out. Amla is a better test match batsman than Warner, Symonds is not better than any of the other candidates for an ATG ODI side. Simplicity itself seems to have become complex for you but whatever. 8-)

Gentle reminder on how CW voted for ODI world XIs

I've decided from now on I will heavily emphasise ring and slip fielding in my ODI ATG XIs top 6, and henceforth my team shall reflect that. The inner ring fielding would easily compensate for any perceived loss of batting, although I'd back these batsmen to the hilt anyhow. There'd be no short singles or plenty of run outs were singles attempted.

Ricky Ponting
Viv Richards
Andrew Flintoff
AB DeVilliers
Andrew Symonds
Wasim Akram
Joel Garner
Muttiah Muralitharan
Glenn McGrath
On a rough estimate, this team will help you save around 9.73 runs per ODI.

On a different note, I don't see this secondary skill coming into picture for instance while picking Mcgrath over Imran or Hadlee in a test match team. Is it because Symonds' spin bowling matters a lot whereas Imran's batting does not matter ? Or is it just because people don't want to let go their favorite player ?

Yeah that's a pretty good take from OS. The vast majority of the 2nd XI could be plausibly argued to be good options for the 1st XI, but at the end of the day though tough calls need to be made.

Darren Gough ahead of Morkel and Johnson though makes me want to vomit

So Symonds is in the second ATG odi xi according to CW. Red Hill's opinion that he is an odi ATG is a pretty valid one and seems like CW agrees.

So opinions are not allowed to change and/or evolve and CW is one entity which voted whenever that was? New members don't matter and actual facts and opinions do not matter? Then why have a forum in the first place?

I don't think the opinion of CW as a whole will have changed too much since the voting was done. It was only a little over a year ago. The one player I can see who will be ranked way higher than he did back then is Rohit. After how well he did in the WC, he'll make the second xi atleast. The rest I don't see changing much. Anyhow the point is that it isn't a ridiculous idea to have Symonds in there.

Symonds didn't dominate for as long as other contenders to first ATG XI. He was also not undisputed best batsman at any point unlike other contenders for top 5 or 6 batting positions. As I think these ATG XIs are also a way to pay tribute to legends, I wouldn't displace others more worthy of a tribute to accommodate Symonds. He was a fine fine player though. He just doesn't cut it in first XI which is no insult. It's like trying to force fit Dravid or Kohli in ATG test XI and then taking offence if told they don't belong there.

For me, he is not an ATG as he wont make my second XI. Which I explained previously. But, it is not ridiculous that he makes a second XI and I never said that. I do think it is ridiculous to have him in the first XI though. And I while I wont rate him as an ATG, my definition of ATG need not be the same as others'. Almost all my posts about him was in response to Stephen insisting he can make an ATG XI until RH jumped in out of nowhere and took offence over nothing.
