Incorporating peaks is good because it gives a way of making a directly equivalent comparison between batsmen in terms of straightforward quality over an equal sample size, whereas career averages can and at this level often are weighed down by batsmen being picked too young or by staying on too long, often for reasons entirely outside a batsman's control.

When talking about longevity, there has to be a provision to factor in what was the average number of tests your team played in that era. Not sure how DoG's formula does this but I assume if something like that were to be done, Kane won't suffer in the longevity stakes against someone like Root that much.

"Average not dropping below 50" isn't necessarily an indicator of more consistency is it? It's mainly because they had a good first test/series. Like for Miandad, he had a huge debut series vs NZ which gave him a decent buffer meaning that even after his poor series vs Australia right after , it didn't drop below 50.

I genuinely thought Hayden would be higher given his insane rate of tonning up. Still 33 is pretty good and reflects how immense he was for Australia.

The same applies to Worrell, who averaged 104.12 after 7 matches.

Perhaps a high and low average over 50 innings would be interesting but I think the midpoint would be very similar to the career average.
