What the hell, Australia actually make a good review decision?

Looked pretty plumb to me, surprised it wasn't given live.

Carbon copy of like four (including one particularly memorable) very similar LBW appeals during the Ashes that were similarly not given but at least this one got reviewed.

Neither Young nor Conway are openers at the FC level are they? I know (think?) Young opened in a few NZ A games but I get the feeling they're mentioned as opening options to fit them in a batting lineup with no other openings aside from Taylor's imminent retirement.

Not sure what to do with Raval. Blundell as temporary opener maybe? Could be a lamb to the slaughter but won't go worse. Let him know this is purely an immediate term measure and will allow him some participation aside from being Watling's understudy.
I think that is how another keeper/back up batsman Bryan Young got his start as a test opener in the final test against Australia in 93. I don't think he had even opened for ND, but he did well enough to get the role full-time.

This summer is becoming a carbon copy of 04/05 for Oz; waltzing through series against Pakistan/NZ without ever being in serious danger of drawing - let alone losing a Test.

It's still too soon to say that. I think(hope) we'll be much more competitive with our best bowler back.

A more docile pitch will help but considering how NZ bats have been totally outclassed against effectively a 3 man bowling attack, just can't see them scoring substantial runs.

He is not going to help the batting, that is the major problem. The bowling never let Australia get away and 416 is not a massive score. Boult returning would be good but if the batsmen deliver similar performances all series it is not going to matter.

Meh, this New Zealand team have won test matches in tougher to win countries, they’ll be fine. I’m still backing them to take one of the next two tests.

You'd like to think they'll adapt better at the McG after this game and with a match against Victoria in between though the odds maybe against it.

Last year in the UAE they went from being Yasir Shah-ed for 90 a/o to batting Pakistan out of the game in the next test, so if they were to recover it wouldn't be without precedent. Totally different challenge here I know.

Yeah, it's actually happened quite a few times that we've had a poor first test and improved.
