CDG is basically the cricketer Stoinis wishes he could be, but with intelligence and resolve.

After Boult fails his fitness test and Wagner literally explodes, I want the following attack for the second test.

Southee
The Mighty Matt McEwan
Henry
De Grandhomme
D Mitchell

200 non stop overs of right arm mediums to find who has the best wobble-fu.

The beauty of cricket is that you can have success all kinds of ways, everyone finds their own thing etc etc, but I genuinely do not understand how Santner has made it to this level with that action.

CdG has acquitted himself pretty well with the ball, showing real value as a 5th. Hope he has a good tour if only to prove he's not out of place abroad. Was looking decent enough with the bat before that unfortunate looking dismissal.

Right on cue, Australia’s most defensive skipper Ricky Ponting begins talking about declarations this evening

The longer they bat the more Lyon (and possibly Labuschagne) become a factor in the 4th innings too. Don't imagine Starc and Cummins will really need the lights to make life difficult either.

Genuinely do not understand the gap between Ponting's (extremely astute) commentary and what he was like as an on-field captain.

He has never taken more than 3 wickets in an innings in his first class career so I would say it is his overall package across the 3 disciplines that sees him picked.

Clearly not bowling at his best though.

Yeah if there's one person I think would actually be logical regarding declarations in the comm box it's him.

Hussey probably made the most sense re: declarations. But the point remains, the lead isn't big enough to declare tonight and it's not worth burning out our attack with Hazlewood down.

Yeah he's plain isn't a Test standard bowler. He's probably not even in New Zealand's five best red ball spinners.

I've said this before but it is a real shame that Rippon hasn't qualified yet (not that we should really have another Southern African), but he could bat 8 and perhaps actually take wickets.

i find it odd that I've seen no media discuss the NZ spinner thing
Santner had one REALLY good day against England with bat and ball which ended up being a matchwinning performance, so that took the scrutiny off him a bit. His relative success in ODIs and some decent performances in his first few tests earned him a good reputation as well. Mark Craig aside, there were hardly any other spinners in the discussion (before Ajaz and Somerville helped engineer some wins in the subcontinent).

When you score a ton and take some wickets (including both openers) in your countries last Test win bowling basically unchanged in the fourth innings, you can see why Santner is in the XI.

Santner was a Brendon McCullum 'gut' selection who has replaced Mark Craig, another 'gut' selection (though tbf Craig had a few strong performances).
Remember when Starc badged him and the lid fell on the stumps in a one dayer? Bloke is lucky to still be here. Was an awful knock
