One is a lot closer to the actual pronunciation than the other?

One has an obvious anglicised pronunciation, the other has an existing South African pronunciation in use in NZ/SA/NZ sporting circles, but is running with a completely made up pronunciation which makes no linguistic sense in the case of this one guy?
I knew a Labuschagne in High School, same pronunciation. I guess the teachers were virulent racists.

Seriously though that 'skukh' noise is a bit of a ditty if you've spent any time in the English speaking world.

It's been a great day of test match cricket so far.

New Zealand have been incredibly disciplined with the ball.

Labuschagne has batted brilliantly. That 6 to bring up his ton was so ***y.

Smith never looked in but still "failed" with a 40+ score.

Neil "Colin Croft" Wagner has to be my favourite bowler. Just love his MO.

Lol what?

"Anglicised" pronunciation is ok but Australian pronunciation isn't?

The name is clearly pronounced Vahgner both by himself before coming to NZ and by South Africans.

You kids have to be winding me up

How is ‘Wagner/Vahgner’ the same as ‘Labooshane/Labooskahgnuh’

Would the South African commentators have even called him ‘Vahgner’ if he was playing for them?
Yes, they have and do.

I can recall at least one of the SA commentators calling him Vahgner on the 2012/13 tour.

It must be frustrating for their fans seeing these two dominating a NZ v Aus test.

Wagner will take 5+ wickets this innings. He's making Labuschagne jump backwards right now.

NZ can thank their discipline earlier that Australia haven't run away with this. They're genuinely making it challenging to bat out there for set batsmen.

Honestly we all could try harder with our pronunciation.

Wagner is pretty easy to say properly.

NZ probably has the easiest indigenous language in the world and yet still no one bothers to pronounce Maori words properly.

Wagner is precisely the type of bowler you need in australia
Would be interested to hear both your reasons for saying this. He has stamina and economy. Neither is he a one dimensional basher of the middle of the pitch. He can swing the ball and has pace variations. Seems to have a number of avenues to stay competitive in hot conditions on flat wickets.

Haha, I would but you've basically said it already. Not just a one-trick pony, realises that you have to try all different things and use your brain as much as just bowling your stock outswinger to get quality batsmen out on flat pitches and exploit every ounce of whatever assistance is available (typically bounce). Won't ever go "eh, this is too hard" and half-ass it for a session or two as well.

Here's my issue with Vaghner vs Wagner.

Vahgner makes him sound too much like a coitus machine. A guy called Neil Wagner however pronounced in that fashion, is perfectly befitting his underrated status. Like I'm racist, but Wagner looks like an Aryan lovechild so you know I don't have bias.

Why is Southee going around the wicket? Wade has a real tendency to fall over early on and he has an inswinger.

EDIT: Ponting on it too.

Speaking of Australianising people's prounciations, we really need to find a way to get Isa Guha to stop saying n00 ball.
