South Africa team selection

Trying to think about Graeme's early confidants.

Eric Simons was almost the biggest believer in Graeme Smith from young. Backed and was coach when he first got into the team/captain. Will report what he picks up from individuals in NMB Giants. Eric is an extremely deep thinker of the game and also has an eye for talent and will love the fact he has had Breetzke, Marais, Burger etc in his team.
Gary Kirsten was the player he looked up to most and like Simons has a long relationship from WP to SA days and will give his views on Durban Heat players.
Not sure he knows Adrian Birrell but Faf is captain of that team.
Ashwell Prince, Robin Peterson and Mark Boucher played under him and will give good advice on players they know and have monitored closely. Prince and Boucher the two big domestic names coaching wise and Robbie P been working with SA U19 players like Breetzke, van Tonder, Coetzee and others.
Will probably speak to Allan Donald in Free State region who will back van Tonder, Coetzee, Jansen in the region most neglected under modern CSA.

So he should be covered quite early on information of players and not just looking at scorecards. So hopefully he can get right into it.

He has his own forthright views and especially on players like Elgar, Markram, Bavuma, Faf, Miller , de Kock and that will be the most important thing short-term for SA. We need them to reach their highest heights possible if it all from now on and if not they will be left out. Particularly Bavuma and Miller looking over their shoulders on performance. Don't think it is even worth mentioning Smith's views on de Bruyn because I think it is just to late to get him ready for England.

The bigger thing about the director position is getting the provincial/franchise sorted. That is where the problem really lies; sorting that will create the long term solutions.

Definitely. That will be in the main focus once the immediateness of England issues and the drawing up of plans/structuring to move forward is out the way. That will be his biggest baby. Franchise v Province and SACA debate and even SA U19 and schools cricket which is our breeding ground. That will be his body of work.

Appalled that the president and board of CSA have taken no responsibility for cricket’s biggest crisis. Now clinging to power.

Read from other forum that CSA has $44 million in debt.. I am hopeful for SA cricket but this is looking grim ATM.

Gary Kirsten set to assist Nkwe and the team in mentorship role : https://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-ne...le-as-cricket-crisis-unites-disparate-figures
As details come out it feels like the old guard looked at the **** going on and stepped in. Particularly Arendse and Bacher who still have the respect and, importantly, political clout to do something about the issues. My guess Kirsten offered his expertise and will act as a consultant to Nkwe. We must not forget that Nkwe while favoured is only 'interim' and with the amount of problems and political fallout/restructuring may not get the job.

Seems to be the case. Even suggests Kallis, Boucher and Rhodes as possibilities to be involved here : https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/28257467/gary-kirsten-mentor-enoch-nkwe-england-series

I can go with them getting the previous selectors back but I hope restraints are loosened. Who were they again ? Zondi, Errol Stewart and ?

One thing we have spoke about but perhaps not enough or bring to light again is how the mis-management of KG Rabada cannot continue.

This all sounds nice and positive. But this is all focusing on the national team, which brings in the big bucks and creates nice front of the shop baubles. But the future of cricket in SA is the provincial game, and as SeamUp mentioned the school system.

The problems in SA cricket will not be sorted long term until we start producing black batsmen of sufficient standard, the reasons we not producing black batsmen are numerous but I do think that a big problem is the lack of quality coaching at school level across the board. As far as I am aware, the number of successful batsmen that have managed to become quality international batsmen after getting coaching in late teens or later are few and far between. Playing at a higher level and getting quality coaching from the age 13+ for potential batsmen is a must for the future of SA.

Smith phoning all his pals? Not that there's necessarily anything wrong with that - if you're trying to put a group together at short notice it makes things a lot easier to bring in people you know for certain you can work with.
Yeah. Suppose we will have to see how much of a role these guys play (full-time or consultancy - I would say Kallis sounds similar to Kirsten). But I think more important than anything else South African cricket has thrived through hard work. We have had a few mavericks but a large percentage of them have also worked hard. We need to get that unified spirit of working hard for the team back and then the belief we can beat anyone. I thought some of the whole it is ok to lose in build up to the WC and through the WC from Faf was a load of absolute bull **** even if we lacked the quality. So these I am convinced would bring a positive and determined mind-set more than anything else.

https://www.sport24.co.za/Cricket/Proteas/saca-repeats-call-for-csa-board-to-step-down-20191209

Irish concluded by saying that SACA were prepared to negotiate with acting CSA chief executive officer, Jacques Faul to discuss and resolve the concerns that they continue to highlight.

He added, however, that they did not want to deal with any current board members or believed they should form part of any CSA negotiating team.

“SACA has noted the appointment of Jacques Faul, as the acting chief executive, and is prepared to deal with him in good faith in order to attempt to resolve as many as possible of the current crises affecting the players. SACA will not however lend credibility to the Board of CSA by dealing with a ‘negotiating panel’ if this comprises any Board members. It is hoped that the new chief executive will appoint a highly competent director of cricket so that, even at this very late stage, he can start putting the best possible professional structure around the Proteas team.
Huge pressure from SACA.

South Africans signed in PSL

Wonder if this means Pretorius, van der Dussen miss some of our domestic season.

South African players in the 2020 Pakistan Super League:

Lahore Qalandars - David Wiese

Multan Sultans - Rilee Rossouw, *Imran Tahir

Islamabad United - Dale Steyn, Colin Ingram, *Rassie van der Dussen

Peshawar Zalmi - Dwaine Pretorius

Karachi Kings - Cameron Delport
Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn has been bought by Islamabad United for next year's Pakistan Super League (PSL).

Steyn and former Proteas team-mate Colin Ingram were bought by United as Platinum players in last weekend's draft.

Platinum players are paid a minimum of £125 000 (R2.4m) and a maximum of £195 000 (R3.7m).

Dolphins all-rounder Cameron Delport was placed in the gold category and was bought by the Karachi Kings.

Delport has been in fine form during the ongoing Mzansi Super League and is currently the fifth-highest run-scorer, making 246 runs in his nine games thus far for the Paarl Rocks.

Meanwhile, the Multan Sultans secured the signature of former Proteas batsman Rilee Rossouw as a platinum player.

Proteas all-rounder Dwaine Pretorius was snagged by the Peshawar Zalmi's as a silver category player.

Former Proteas all-rounder David Wiese was the only South African retained by his franchise, the Lahore Qalandars ahead of the player draft.

Proteas duo Imran Tahir (Multan Sultans) and Rassie van der Dussen (Islamabad United) have signed up as supplementary players.

The 2020 PSL is scheduled to get under way from February 20-March 22.

This fifth season of the tournament will be held entirely in Pakistan.
