CW Decides The XI of the Decade

I hold it against him when comparing him with lyon. I dont hold it against him when comparing him with a guy who didnt even have to face that challenge like ashwin. Doesnt make much sense to do so.
Yeah I openly only rate Herath as much as I have to, but saying Ashwin has a good record in India but Herath doesn't is some pretty low rent shilling. Bowling to Indian batsmen in India is clearly very different to bowling to touring batsmen in your home conditions ffs. If Sri Lanka had Ashwin instead in those games he wouldn't have done much better IMO.

If Herath is a better spinner than Ashwin/Lyon and you are going to ignore his crap record against India then Dravid / Inzamam are better batsman than Tendulkar/ Ponting because they have more centuries in won matches outside Asia .

But Herath has poor record against India even in SL . Herath averages 45 against India in SL . So are you telling me that performance against no.1 team shouldn't matter anymore ? .

Ashwin has dismissed Sangakkara 4 out of 4 times in SL , he has dismissed Williamson 3 out of 4 times in IND . You are massively under rating his record in Asia.

What does Ashwin average against India in Sri Lanka?

I definitely think Ashwin was better than Herath but this is a bad argument. It's making my position look bad because you apparently think this is the best way to argue it and your obvious wrongness denigrates our shared position.

And don't you dare respond to this by telling me what it also means I think as an extension when it doesn't. That's always a bad argument. When people on CW make a point they don't mean "only this matters and I judge everything by this one criteria".

I would go with below XI

Williamson
Watling
Smith
Kohli
Younis
Devilliers
Shakib
Philander
Ashwin
Steyn
Anderson

Didn't we discover recently that Herath's record in Australia was surprisingly above average? That's a big swelling effort for a big man.
Idk about "surprising", he always impressed when he bowled down here. Excellent control of flight and length.

This is hard. Ideally I'd pick the spinner based on the country the match is played in. Lyon outside Asia, Herath in Sri Lanka, Ashwin in India, Shakib in Bangladesh and Shah in the UAE/Pak.

In the end I'll vote Herath. He has the most wickets and was never dropped for being rubbish outside Asia or humorously enough, unfit. Lyon outside Asia would easily won my vote though.

Aight well I’m sober now so Herath barely wins it.

Cook
Warner
Williamson
Smith
Kohli

Herath
Steyn
Anderson

So before we decide what to do with the keeper and the mess at 6 I think we should round out the attack.

Trent Boult | Stuart Broad | Pat Cummins | Josh Hazlewood | Morne Morkel | Vernon Philander | Kagiso Rabada | Tim Southee | Mitchell Starc

Is there any reason Mitchell Johnson isn't nominated for this team? I realize he retired in about 2015 but he had some very influential series' before then. Would have thought he'd be at least in the argument.

I'll vote for Starc, but Johnno definitely deserves to be in the discussion. Ryan Harris too ftr.

Coronis just lists the suggested players off the top of his head, and sometimes forgets some. Dale Steyn wasn't listed in the opening bowlers section before but obviously won anyway. You're absolutely free to vote for Johnson if you like.

Philander's been the next best / most influential bowler of the decade but I don't really love the idea of him bowling at first change given how reliant he is on seam movement. Cummins has been gun but has been playing for less than three years (excluding his dayboo), so I kind of don't hate the idea of Johnson myself. Rabada and Morkel are the other two I'm considering. I'll come back to it later.

I’m pretty much just listing the first 10 or so players who come to mind based of wickets and averages etc. you’re absolutely free to vote for whoever you want.
