Just seen Root’s dismissal

Yikes

Given the tactics, I could understand if he slapped one to cover when trying to go over the top or skied a hook when trying to drag it from outside off but that was terribad

I thought theyd be trying to score a bit more freely, maybe grind out a small lead just to make NZ bat again and soak up more time

An entire day of stonewalling doesn't seem sustainable

This will surely be a 60 min left 2 wickets to get type scenario

That honestly must be a math error on cricinfo

I've seen Stokes score reliably for what seems like his whole career

He definitely has the feel of a 43-45 avg batsman when he walks out
That's what he has been the past 4 years, it's just the start of his career that drags him down badly.

Yeah I went and checked. That ashes ton way back at the start of his career made me assume he had a strong beginning too, but apparently he was pretty meh til that 258 and has been consistent ever since

How did Santner bowl to Stokes? He looked flat in the initial parts I saw before I shot off for lunch. It should have been absolutely tailor made to give him a working over in that rough...but then I think about how Santner bowled to Pakistan in the World Cup in similar conditions and I wonder whether he's capable yet.

Seems like for some reason the top English all-rounders (Botham, Flintoff, Stokes) all have raw stats that are relatively unflattering compared to their reputations. Something about the nature of their memorable performances totally overshadowing the times when they are ineffective.

Stokes first innings is one of the reasons he doesn't average more. In no real trouble on a flat wicket and just gives it away. Should be getting more big tons that he does get. Only big ton he has is that 258 and that was a freak innings where the last 180 were scored in little more than a session. Always battling his natural tendency to be aggresive. Can only bat so long without losing focus. Last time around in Auckland also a good example. Had batted with great discipline in trying to draw the game and then yet started playing a load of ill considered shots before he got out having battled it out for 180 balls.

Don't have any great hopes of Pope or Curran staying too long out there today. Neither has any great experience of batting for draws and both aggresive bats who won't really trust their defensive games. Buttler has shown the ability though so hopefully he can produce something if he gets in. Might be tempted to get Buttler ahead of Pope for this reason (don't want Buttler stranded with Broad and Archer), although Pope has to learn.

In fairness to Root, he was faultless today until the ball he got out to (which is positive going forward). As opposed to Denly who looked very likely to give it away - and yet is still there.

Think Nz will need the 2nd new ball to do a lot if they’re to wrap this up. This pitch has gone totally inert and England’s tail looks very strong (at least on paper).

Yes and we don't have Boult to use that second new ball either.

Feels like we've been in this situation a tremendous number of times the last few years - final day battling an opposition intent on blocking out, a flat pitch and sometimes the weather, to try to force a result. Think we've succeeded more often than not, but also have been frustrated several times. Six more wickets looks fairly challenging right now.

Hope it's nothing more than a minor niggle for Boult, would be ****ful if he's not fit (or properly fit) for the Aus series.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
I think these two will hold out for a while and then they'll collapse in a heap, with brief hope given by Buttler.
