The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Burgey

Yeah maybe it's the undiagnosed Aspergers in me, but there's always been an annoying continuity problem baked into this concept with me. Arguably the bloke who played the best shot I ever saw had the best peak, and if the argument against that is some players played good shots for longer than one ball then you can apply that effectively infinitely until there's no difference between peak and career.

Purely as a bowling unit Imran-Hadlee-Marshall-Warne can not be improved. It is very difficult to claim that Steyn is a better bowler than Imran.
Assuming all of them averaged 0 with the bat, there is no strong argument that a Steyn-Ambrose-Murali-McGrath combo (or) Trueman-Akram-O'reilley-Lillee combo or any other equally potent attack is definitely better than them. These are all absolute gold standard world beaters.

Steyn was a better bowler than Imran. Wasn’t difficult. That attack could be improved if you replace Imran with Steyn, Ambrose or McGrath.

Since there are several other contenders, here's a team to play against them:

Arthur Shrewsbury
Warren Bardsley
Billy Murdoch
Stanley Jackson*
Warwick Armstrong
Monty Noble
Wilfred Rhodes
Jack Blackham+
George Lohmann
Tom Richardson
Charlie Blythe

(I'm assuming that Woolley, Taylor and Macartney, for instance, hadn't played enough by 1919 to convince the 1919 judges).
4 of the players there were very close to selection. The Big Ship, was not one of them, he hadn’t played as well as he would after the war.
Lohmann great player to leave out,he’s one of the best ever and only unlucky because I have a certain affinity to the players I went with, Shrewsbury also in the same boat. He lost out to two of the best opening batsmen ever.
Stanley Jackson I thought about, however he never left England.
Wilfred Rhodes, I just couldn’t decide where to put him to bat. Would be a good match.

Does TOTAB's connection with Burgey throw a bit of shadow on him?

India produced lot of good to great ODI openers but hardly any middle order bats besides Kohli.

That's a very good team. None of the '80s guys apart from Kapil make it? India won the WC and a couple of other prestigious ODI tournaments in that decade from what I know.

Mid 80s indian team was quite good. The World Championship of cricket victory in 1985 was as clinical as they come. Won every match. Just to prove that WC 1983 was not a fluke.

Amarnath, Srikanth, Shastri, Binny and few others came to the party when it mattered the most.

Kapil was indeed clutch. Won the WCC SF with the bat and final with the ball. Stuff of legend.

The 80s Indian team had so many players who could bowl and bat. They were not easy to beat as they kept coming at you. One bowler has a bad day? No problem, some one else will twirl his arm and get the job done.

Openers : Sachin and Rohit

Middle Order : Kohli, Dravid and Yuvraj

Wicket Keeper : Dhoni

All Rounder : R. Jadeja

Bowlers : Kapil, Bumrah, Srinath and Kuldeep

Rahul Dravid and Ravindra Jadeja are the two surprise picks in my team. Jadeja can bat, bowl and saves a lot of runs while fielding. Dravid can stabilise the middle order and is a back up WK.

I remember them being better than New Zealand and Sri Lanka. And being equal to England. challenged Australia, but were **** against Windies and Pakistan. Stats agree with that memory.

v Australia 1980-1989 31 12 16 0 3
v Bangladesh 1988-1988 1 1 0 0 0
v England 1981-1989 17 8 9 0 0
v New Zealand 1980-1988 22 15 7 0
