Shakib banned for failure to disclose approaches

well he didn't commit the same offence so

I don't see how shakib not reporting it is any less offense than just bowling a pointless no-ball in a test match.

Shakib's is infinitely worse- as he is not 18 years old like Aamir was.

He has destroyed his legacy and will be remembered as a match fixer (still preferable to a premeditated cheat like steve smith and warner though)

IMO fixers are far worse than ball tamperers, at least ball tamperers are trying to win a contest. Fixing is woeful and a low low act
Disagree.
Premeditated ball tampering (what steve smith did and forced younger player to do) is on the same level as lance armstrong drug cheating to me.
What Aamir did is minor, he spot fixed a no-ball. pretty meaningless.

Full on match fixing is bad, very bad. But I still place it as less evil than what steve smith and warner did.

Wouldn't a better comparison be when McCullum didn't disclose an approach for like a few years?
Yeah, this is what came to mind for me too. Seems to be kinda inconsistent.

Not in any way excusing Shakib, though.

Surely IPL money is enough to make any cricketer feel valued. Wonder how crap the Bangladesh national contracts pay for Shakib to risk talking to match fixers in 2019

Rant incoming

The 'premeditated' ball tampering not being premeditated beyond the circumstance it was used - despite what nostradamii like you have claimed baselessly - is nowhere near as premeditated as spot and match fixing where an outcome is decided well before the match even commences. Ball tampering is garden variety cheating where advantage is trying to be gained in a match which is still very much in flux, whereas fixing creates a pantomime with actors rather than players. What Warner did was little more premeditated than all the other guys (Faf for instance, twice) who have been caught (unless you want to present evidence rather than insinuation) although the choice of materials and methods was a little more extreme (yet laughable), so I'm not sure why you continue to apply a double standard except the ulterior motive of hatred of Smith, Warner etc. For you to continue to compare it a nearly decade-long highly sophisticated program of cheating by Armstrong, which involved a large number of people and multiple coverups, witness intimidation and so on is laughable in the extreme and just shows how non-objective your opinion in. You're kinda forgetting that match and spot fixing often involve actual criminal offences in their execution by at east one of the parties involved and Butt, Asif and Amt actually went to prison. Regular cheating being orders of magnitude worse than pre-determining outcomes and actual crimes... smh.

End rant

Don't think approaches come out of thin air tbh. There's usualy an intermediate party or two involved, and seeing as how Shakib's not contesting the accusation, he must have acquiesced to being approached, tacitly or otherwise, at some stage. That's incriminating in itself.

With Tamim not touring I can imagine the there go any chances of Bangladesh being remotely competitive. A shame too, I'd have thought they might at least manage to outdo South Africa's efforts.

Oh man, I just found out about this news. This is absolutely horrible stuff. Really hope Shakib doesn't end up out of international cricket for two whole years.

Seriously gutted by this :-(

How does the ICC get hold of his messages transcript? Do they have the power to request and compel yelcos to provide this? Or perhaps players are contracted to turn their phones over upon request, but surely youd have deleted your messages? How did they find out?

Even if you delete your messages there are ways they can been retrieved. Something to do with cache, I'm not all that phone-savvy.

Conspiracy theory:

BCB had it this whole time and only brought it up now with Shakib getting a lucrative advertising contract directly with a company without consulting the BCB.

Ah I see the "but is damaging a cricket ball really as bad as inviting organised crime to meddle with the sport" brigade is rolling in already

On Shakib itself, those texts are baaaaad. I woudn't be surprised if there's an element of plea deal in this; cop the ban now rather than letting it snowball and get worse, which is honestly probably the best option all around.

He probably pissed someone off during the recent strike who dug up a bit of dirt on him and blew the whistle.

All this just makes me wonder how many players get away with it

I honestly think it'd be hard in this day n age to get away with it for too long. Can't phones be hacked with relative ease by professionals

Dirk Nannes said on radio commentary semi-recently that it was extremely blatant and rampant during his time playing in some of the smaller T20 leagues, the BPL included

Seems like the shorter the format the more prevalent bookie involvement is.

Kinda looking forward to watching what happens in the hundred now. Promises to be spicy.

A die hard MI fan on Twitter said to me that IPL is the cleanest league in the world when I said that MI buys out the other team given that they are owned by one of the richest persons in the world but he didn't believe me. Hopefully this incident is an eye opener for that idiot. Question is again, why don't bookies target Indian players?
