It's not something I'd really thought about before but it is probably true that more people (if they're prepared to pay a fair bit for either) have theoretical access to Sky (via satellite) than they do to a high speed, high data internet connection. Existing subscribers to either for non-cricket reasons aren't really relevant to the percentage of people willing to pay $80pm or whatever for cricket who can actually get it if Sky v Spark gets the deal. It probably is closer to 100% with Sky than with Spark.
Nah, about 1 million nz households have unlimited internet (not all fibre but I’ve never had problems with sky sports now on vdsl) and only around 750k have sky (not all of whom would have sky sports.

Nah you've missed my point.

People with access to it if they want to pay for it and people who actually have it already aren't the same thing.

It's entirely possible that more people willing to pay $50 or $80 or whatever it is per month for cricket could get it through Sky than Spark, even if more people already have high speed internet than Sky.

That's my point too.

I guess SKY's only strategy is to sit back and see if Spark self-implode. And hang on with grim life to rugby.

See the Sky CEO said they went above their maximum offer for the cricket and were still way behind Spark’s offer. So at least NZC are filling the coffers from the deal. Maybe we’ll be able to afford a home three test series one day!

Will be of high interest on how they're going to spend this extra money. Although NZC have been running at a loss for a while now, so it's probably only to drag them back to square.

Hurrah! A three test series!

We nearly saw one last summer. Against Bangladesh.

You would think that Spark have a massive reserve of money to lean on...
They do, which is why they've won out here. But they're not going to run any operations at a massive loss, so if sport doesn't justify itself I'd be surprised if they were prepared to run it as a loss leader for their other products.

Will there be any sort of coverage of the intra-squad T20 games? Would be nice to hear how players are getting on. Can't find much about it, but the stuff article says it's starting Tuesday, which I assume means today given the Blackcaps will be part of the opening plunket shield round next week.

Na this is incorrect. They'll run a loss leader for a while to build viewership/awareness and trust in their service. As soon as they get their hands on rugby or something bigger and better than a loss leader, they'll drop it in an instant though.

Also not really the thread for it, but FMD the NZR + Sky deal is dodgy as ****.

a competitive market will be good for the game even if it's potentially frustrating short term. as long as nzc keep the product good i.e. we keep winning games against real opposition, then nzc can make some money and stop pretending we need 7 match t20 series.

It's a 6 year deal iirc with Spark though, that's a bit more than short term. Can do a lot of damage in that time.

A case of when not if for Conway.

The South African top-order batsman is one of 24 cricketers summoned to Lincoln, near Christchurch, for intra-squad T20 matches on Tuesday and Wednesday as the five-match series opener looms at Hagley Oval on November 1.

"We like the skills that he has as a player and this gives us an opportunity to see a little bit more of him at a level up from first-class cricket.

"He looks like he could have the goods to play international cricket and that's part of these camps, is finding out more."

Black Caps for Twenty20 camp and intra-squad matches: Todd Astle, Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Devon Conway, Colin de Grandhomme, Martin Guptill, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Scott Kuggeleijn, Cole McConchie, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Ed Nuttall, Glenn Phillips, Seth Rance, Hamish Rutherford, Mitchell Santner, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Blair Tickner, Kane Williamson (Wednesday only), George Worker.

Sky sport 2 are showing highlights of the 2015 second test against England at Leeds. The game where Watling whacks it to all parts

And the Test where Mark Craig was a match-winner too. As in part was Luke Ronchi. Good times.

I was subjected to the first Test highlights before this, where we got thrashed despite scoring 520 (and we were 400-3) then bowled an incredible power of **** to give the game away.

That's the one where NZ needed to survive another 10 overs and Boult was caught on the boundary at third man? Meanwhile, Glenn Phillips dominated the T20 Warm-Up.

Considering what he showed in Australia a few months later, I'm still utterly stunned how he managed to bowl so economically
