A mate of mine who isn't a Surrey supporter reckons that Burns will be captaining the side next summer. Quite why anyone would dump this on Rory is beyond me, but he may have a point. At least Burns has some captaincy experience, and not being captain may make a difference to Root's batting.
Well it a better option than giving it to Stokes which is what they will probably do.

Good captaincy is at least 70 or 80% about having good players.

The coaching is a bigger issue when you look at the performances with the bat. The England test side will have a chance to start anew this winter regardless of whether Root stays as captain.

For all the criticism of Strauss, he'd be close to the best captain worldwide if he was playing today. At the very least he struck me as an excellent leader and while he was conservative tactically he didn't come across as inept. Kind of like Misbah for example who I'd consider a good captain.
Strauss was a good captain imo. Conservative tactics were usually appropriate for that team.

Bring Eoin Morgan as specialist Test captain. He can't bat any worse than these guys, and sure he's not actually English, but he did "win" a World Cup as captain.

Used to cop plenty of criticism at the time though. Good Lord would he be a godsend now.
Yeah, both of them copped loads of stick but were both far better than Root.

You just know his answer to this will be to bowl Archer into the ground in the 2nd innings.

Only 24 overs in the session, albeit with 6 wickets. I suppose at the too short 1.5 minutes per wicket that's equivalent to about two and a half overs missed.

Which was exactly my point. Seems harsh to put him in Cook's category and I don't rate the whole "Root's captaincy is so poor it makes Strauss look good", because Strauss was good. Cook was below average, just seemed to lack a real Plan B.

That session was so much better than what I was expecting. However, I'm sure Roy, Stokes and Denly are regretting their shot choice.

Problem for us is we need to make sure Buttler and Woakes can't build up a goof partnership.

Not sure there is an answer to this tbf.

Speaking of captaincy, pretty sure Jimmy put himself forward when Cook retired. Feel like he could do a stopgap job up until retirement, but of course that could be any time. Broad the best bet I guess.

That would be my take on it. I guess some people's 'conservative' is simply getting the basics right.
