3rd Test at Headingley, Leeds

Given that we aren't even at the technical halfway point of this series, this "bowl Archer into the ground" tactic from England is a completely unnecessary boon for Aus
If Woakes was capable of being angry, which obviously he isn’t, then he’d be furious at not getting a shot when it was swinging.

Especially given Archer hasn’t gone faster than 89 clicks so far today.

Not getting this, it's 4.00 pm and he's bowled 9 overs. Absolutely fine on a stop-start day.

The real problem with keeping him on too long is that Woakes should have bowled more.

Edit: I suppose that's the point you're making actually, carry on.

It does look a bit dark but it isn't unplayable.

Still I know that the weather has helped but if you told me Australia would be two down at the end of the day (probably unlikely they come back on?) I'd bite your hand off.
Some decent looking light patches not too far away. Bound to see more play today.

Root is becoming a clueless captain surely it worth a risk bowling the spinner for half hour, they wont get back on for play today.

That, and the way Root has used him in the three innings so far is inevitably going to blunt his effectiveness in such a compressed series. Compare it to the way Clarke used Johnson in 2013/14, for example.

Going off for bad light before tea is setting a precedent for some early session 3 finishes this match right? Unless we get cloudless days moving forward but I’m not holding my breathing for that

Congratualtions Australia you've retained the Ashes.

The decision to bowl first will go down in infamy.
I mean if it hadn't been for the rain and some better bowling, these conditions are exactly those where we've been shot out for <100 half a dozen times in the last decade.

Doesn't put as much exertion into his action, especially when he's bowling late 80s like today.

Conditions don't really call for a short sharp spell. Just needs to be putting it on the spot. Which he hasn't done either tbf.

Even after all these years, that Harris ball is probably the best one I've ever seen. Cracker.

I'm honestly amazed they weren't shot out for 100 given everything else. They actually managed to scare a few fans on the forum IIRC!

We gambled on the cloud cover without looking at the forecast apparently.

Could have paid off, likely will go down as a huge error. I'm kneejerking just a tad I would like to think we can bat 4th on this pitch to win, but I doubt it.

Bowling first is always a gamble tbf. You basically have to win or be well in front by about tea or, especially on dry pitches, you're setting yourself up for trouble later on. But this looks much more justified than Paine's decision to bowl first last week, for example.
