Don't really get this concussion sub thing. Seems a bit arbitrary, why is a head injury treated differently to say, if he was ruled out with a broken arm?

Sad to hear though, if he can't play at Headingley it'll be a great shame. This could turn into one of those great contests.
Concussions in sport and all the safety around it is in vogue. Fair enough too I'd rather a busted arm than brain damage

Because concussion symptoms are more difficult to spot and easier to rationalise away (and, as we've seen, often delayed) which could lead to understandable reluctance for a side to give themselves a huge disadvantage if they aren't entirely sure. Which puts a batsman in a situation which is, not to put too fine a point on it, potentially fatal.

The brain is important iirc
He's kinda right though isn't he? A broken arm while not as serious in the grand scheme of things should entitle the team to a sub as well if they get one in this case.

Edit :oh wait sparks post makes sense.

I think the logic is "playing through it". I suppose you could make an injury worse regardless but brain injuries have potentially serious ramifications yet at the same time see players more likely to go through it.

Well yeh, but this can be sorted by employing doctors who are interested in looking after people rather than winning Test Matches.

How long until the ICC rules on the concussion substitution? It would be good to give either Smith or Labuschagne an over or two to try and get a wicket.

It seems like they already have OK'd the Labuschagne replacement, if CricInfo is to be believed.

Will Smith and Labuschagne both be credited this test to their stats? I know this matter is of no importance but I'm curious

Steve Smith “should have stayed off for his own safety and gone to hospital for a scan,” Derek Wyatt from Brain Campaign Charity said yesterday. Now he's out of the game with delayed concussion. Terrible to think what an impact of second concussion could have been

Tbh, wouldn't be against like-for-like subs for any injury that makes it impossible/unsafe for a player to take further part in the game

Yikes. This is why the concussion sub is a good idea.

Yeah it's worth considering. But it isn't hard to see why this has been treated as a unique case. If anything it doesn't go far enough.
