Are newly registered users automatically checked for being a possible multi or do mods wait until they expose themselves (metaphorically speaking)? A “new” user appeared in the 2nd Test thread who seemed familiar and seemed very familiar with Cricket Web and some posters.

We have an automated process but sometimes people figure out how to evade it and we have to use different manual means to weed them out. Obviously going into too much depth about what those are in public would be counter-productive haha, but "both" is the short answer.

There are ways other than IP addresses we use to detect them though, so this isn't really true.

I think it was because threads used to get side tracked with people asking why someone had been banned when “Banned” appeared under their User Name.

Interesting to see that both Pratters and Windie weathers received 'permanent bans' in the first few pages of it, many years ago. But both eventually came back at some point because I remember interacting with both of them

There's quite a few cases of permas being overturned on request. I know I had that happen to me, and it also happened to the erstwhile benchmark.
