Srinath's finest moment was when he hit Ponting in the face with a bouncer, went up to him to see if he as ok, and got a torrent of abuse thrown his way from Ponting for having the nerve to do so. Poor bloke. 90s Indian quicks were so mild mannered.
All our players in those days used to have meek and submissive personalities. Ganguly came along and some ****y players like Zaheer, Sehwag, Sreesanth and Yuvraj started getting in. It's good to have a few arrogant, annoying wankers like Kohli and Jaddu in the team.

Pretty gross behavior from Ponting. Macho alpha bullshit. Glad he's chilled out post playing career, really likeable guy these days

Srinath was such a likable bloke in that team. Lacked the killer instinct. Always got a feeling that when the match was getting away from the team, he would give in. 1996 Ahmedabad vs SA was a glorious exception and one of my favorite memories.

Johnson wins this one though.

Johnson at his peak was a force of nature, only Holding/Akhtar/Thompson at their peaks could match him. He was a pure fast bowler, no swing/seam all gun barrel straight and fiery pace. I also feel that Phillip Hughes incident changed him a lot as a bowler.

Meh. All test match cricketers are alphas. If they weren't they wouldn't have made it or wouldn't handle it psychologically. Srinath had bowled a bouncer, Ponting had misplayed it, and Ponting had that demeanour of just wanting to get on with things, to show he wasn't fazed.

I think things have changed post Phil Hughes, but this was de riguer at the time.

Ponting was definitely a ****. There's an anecdote of him telling ABDV to piss off or something after scoring his 168*. There were various incidents with umpires as well.

It wasn't de riguer (had to google that) at the time at all. It WAS gross behaviour from Ponting however way you slice it, not sure what being alpha has to do with it.

Wasn't even gross behaviour. Srinath pinged him. Ponting was always up for the contest. His whole psyche in the contest would have been to show Srinath it didn't faze him and then to get on top of Srinath with the bat. That's who Ponting the competitor was. Ponting didn't want Srinath to check if he was ok, same as he wouldn't check if he'd hit Srinath had he been a bowler. There's a whole history of batsmen not wanting to show bowlers that they've hurt them. So yeh, it was de riguer.

If you don't know what being alpha has to do with this scenario, I don't quite know what to say to you.

Lol RH get real. Srinath thought he'd hurt him and wanted to check on him and Ponting, no doubt a little rattled and embarrassed he'd let himself get hit, snapped and gave him an unfair spray/swore at him.

He was an immature punk back then. It's different to Brian Close not rubbing his bruises after Holding kept pinging him or Steve Waugh not breaking his stare with Ambrose
