“He's a proven world-class performer, a fantastic player,” Root said of Smith. “It will be interesting to see how it unfolds throughout the series. Last time they came, almost when the wickets were very good and flat he made it really count and made two very big hundreds. When it moved around
it looked slightly different. So it'll be interesting to see how he approaches and tries to combat the movement out there and [whether] we can exploit anything early on.”
Might just leave this here for the moment...

An amazing score to wake up to given we were 130/8 when I went to bed. Smith is incredible. If he was still banned, we'd be looking at all out 150.

Really great test match in prospect here, which is always the case when near 300 is put up in the first innings (or at least in England, that is). However, the momentum is certainly with Australia. Smith really is sensational.

Predict 4 England batsmen to get 50+ tomorrow, for us to get a lead, going on to win, just to prove that hundreds don't always win matches, and that Joe Root's 40 odd fifties are more valuable than all of Smith's 24 hundreds as a result.

That's the English way

Just churns them out everywhere. All conditions, all opponents. He's unbelievable. It's like the conditions don't matter, if he's in teh mood (and he usually is) he just makes runs and mentally it all comes the same to him

All the banter about Aus picking the made-of-glass Pattinson and its Jimmeh that breaks down after 4 overs, a bit ironic

He wasn’t taking singles and catching positions weren’t really in play. Maybe could have kept one slip but that’s marginal.

They didn’t execute so well, probably because the attack was exhausted. But no way is there a possible plan to 120* Steve Smith that beats ‘bowl at Lyon+ hope he holes out’.
Smith's ability to find the gaps on the fence with his leg side hoicks was genuinely insane. Think overall these kind of tactics get way too much criticism. If the specialist batsmen in the situation is new to the crease then sure, but a player of Smith's calibre just wasn't going to get out in regulation fashion to the old ball when he's seeing it like a beach ball and facing the second string bowlers/knackered Broad and Woakes. There's countless amounts of past evidence to prove it.

TPC is so good words fail to properly describe how good he is.

I rate him over Ponting already.

Smith has played in a worse side in generally tougher conditions against better bowling attacks than Ponting. The gap between Smith and his peers is way higher than Ponting and his peers.

Much as I rate Ponting, and I rate Ponting very highly, Smith has done more with less. He's just a great player, the likes of which don't come along often at all. He gets into the zone and nobody even looks like getting him out, regardless of conditions.

Last night's knock reminded me of his India tour - alien conditions and he still churns out the runs.

Simply a master.

Yeah but you factor in the state of your bowlers before you do it. The tactic in this instance led to him upping the scoring rate by a factor of four. If they were prepared to keep the field up, he's taking risks and they're winning because he'll grab a single on the fourth ball of an over and Lyon will get nailed sooner rather than later. And Aus is likely all out 240-250 odd, with Smith stranded in the 80s.

It should also be said, without wanting to sound niggardly, that for all the talk of England's bowlers being exhausted, they've ended up bowling basically the same amount of overs as any four-bowler attack in world cricket. it wasn't like they were at the fag end of two month tour of India, had galloping dysentery and were playing in Chennai with the open sewer around the ground. They were in Birmingham (I know, but still) with sweaters on and it was day one of the series, with Broad cherry ripe having not played a WC. I'm sorry, but if they're cooked day one with four front line bowlers at their disposal (Anderson's injury nws) then they're doing something awfully wrong in their prep.

How about how intimidating the crowd is meant to be? The cheers from the Aussie supporters when TPC got his ton drowned out the boos of the locals. I mean, they sit there singing songs and get pissed. I've been in ladies lounges in bush pubs that are more intimidating than that joint.

Also, does anyone else think this deck will turn a lot from day three onwards? It seemed very dry day one.

Fair enough on the four man attack thing. But how was it England's tactics that led to him upping the scoring rate? He wasn't taking singles and wasn't even getting that many twos from hitting it into the open spaces, he was literally smoking boundaries. If he's finding gaps on the fence you can bet your life he's finding gaps in the infield if they're there.
