This is the most long-term useless incredible innings. Doesn't begin to solve any of our nagging problems, but it's just so good.

reckon giving Leach a run as opener might not be the worst thing given what Burns and Roy have demonstrated

Gets you a second spinner in the lineup too.

Bairstow-esque dismissal but Roy played the right way. Seems like the type of pitch where you're never really in but get good value for shots.

Another 13 runs and Jack Leach will have the highest score by an English opener since Jennings' 146 vs SL in Galle in Nov 2018
This has happened btw. This is now the highest score by an English opener in the last 6 Tests, and third highest in the last 17.

I like the way Roy held his bat nice and straight and close to his body for about 3 seconds after the ball hit the stumps. Definitely fooling everyone.

It reminds me of Alex Tudor's match-winning 99* against New Zealand in 1999. iirc he batted at number 3 as a night-watchman and made what should have been a challenging chase look easy.

If England win this test it will be the fifth lowest first innings score made by a winning side, and the other four were all pre-WWI.

Think Roy is going to be more likely to score when there's more pace on the ball compared to an attack like this too. Struggles early on with pace off the ball in ODi cricket. He's always going to be susceptible to the moving ball too but if he can get through the first few he has the potential to be dangerous. I think we have to at least give him a go in The Ashes.
