Here's what you do if you're Guptill and so badly out of form. You take a punt and walk at the bowlers (Astle/Bmac style) to put them off their length, hope to get one out of the middle with this approach, which will could make the bowler go away from Plan A, and could be enough to turn your form around.

What you don't do is stay on the crease poking and prodding as Guptill did for his 1 off 14.
This is exactly what I've been banging on about for a week and a half. Gup does this against lesser sides. If he got out going hard, it was no more than we've seen from him not going hard. Nicholls was always going to bat the way he batted, and he actually went OK. And I have no grievances against Ross or Kane, they know from learned experiences if they go we can be 150 all out real quick. I just think Gup has been really disappointing in this World Cup, only in terms of the fact he hasn't backed himself. 6600 ODI runs, 16 tons, and he still doesn't seem to believe he's good enough against strong sides in big matches. I don't know if they have a mental skills coach but someone like Baz would have done well to say to him, just be the player we know you are. Hit over the top. If you get out, we're OK with it. We've won all our big ODIs in the past carrying a mentality of taking it to the big boys, not grinding it out.

Did you listen to Stead on Guptill over the weekend? "If he digs in, trusts his technique the runs will begin to flow"

This guy is out of his depth. Hell just give us a seperate coach for the limited overs team. I can't put up with his gameplans anymore.

Bit too much being made of the whole “India was falling apart” thing.

Couple of misfields =\= falling apart?
Couldn't agree more.

As is this pretense that Trent Boult is suddenly Akram 2.0, and that he's even odds of ripping 4-5 Indian poles within the first 10 overs.

Exactly this. Guptill looks petrified to play a shot in anger. What are they saying in the dressing room to try and alleviate this? Crawling to 230 may win us the game, but I also won't be surprised if they knock it off only 3 down with 70 balls to spare.

Been a very disappointing campaign on a number of levels.

Yup, hard to believe this is the same player who belted South Africa around the park for 180 two years ago. Come to think of it, since then he's not been much of a factor in the ODI lineup. The long breaks and injuries seem to have stalled his progress a bit.

The worst thing for NZ with a 240 score will be that India could just sit on Boult and Ferguson to some extent. Could make picking wickets upfront tricky.
Ya it has to be a team bowling effort. Henry and CDG in their first spells have to pick wickets.

That phrase literally means "I'm going to open an umbrella in your ass" which is to be interpreted as "I'm going to kick your ass". Folks, this is why we need mandatory Hindi across India

Who thinks it will be worth watching today?
Pitch to turn into a road, sunny Manchester conditions, low total to chase, competition favourites vs the minnows!!! Hmmmm! It could all end up a bit Afghanistan (but without the fighting).
