That is a good replacement. He is a reliable batsman. Should open. KL back to 4.
Yes, and he's not slow like a typical FC batsman either. His LA SR is 100+. That top 4 looks solid on paper.

1. Mayank
2. Rohit
3. Kohli*
4. Rahul
5. Kedar
6. Pant+
7. Hardik
8. Jadeja
9. Kuldeep
10. Shami
11. Bumrah

I'm surprised people are actually positive about mayank opening. I sort of am too but that's because I don't rate Rahul at all at the moment. You guys do realize agarwal has literally never played an odi right? It'd be a massive ask for him to be shunted in to open midway through a world cup.

It's really sad though how much they dislike Rayudu. Would have been an easy slot into #4.

We have a strange scenario where specialist batsmen are sitting at home (Shaw, Rahane, Rayudu) and we are filling our batting lineup with keepers (Pant, DK, Dhoni) and all-rounders (Kedar, Jadeja). They are decent keeps/ARs but they are not specialist batsmen. [It's too late for Dhoni and too early for Pant to be considered specialist batsmen]

Unknown quantity without the fear of failure at the top of the order may be just what we need tbh

Although yea Mayank may not be prepared to cope with the expectations of a billion people #Pressure

List A avg of 48 and a strike rate of 100. Why wasn't he in the squad all along instead of DK, Shankar etc?

This middle-order episode is a complete failure of planning by the selectors and heads should roll. Rayudu who played a major chunk of matches in the lead-up gets dropped and not called in as a standby replacement. Shankar got picked seemingly on a whim, failed and got injured. Replacement is a debutant. I mean, what the ****.

Same reason why he made his test debut a few years later than expected - partly politics, and partly selectors not watching any domestic cricket except IPL

International Captain
At the moment apart from Rohit/Kohli/Pandya, you can replace anyone with anyone and our batting can only improve. I really used to rate Jadhav but he has done **** all for a long time now.

Cruxdude

International Debutant
Jadhav right now neither bowls nor is given an opportunity to bat. ****ing Dhoni even shields him when there is absolutely no sane reason to do that. He either has to bat at 4 or just get someone else. I am ok with Mayank opening but wish it was not this late in the tournament for him to debut especially given he is not playing the Bangladesh game. **** how crucial was Shikhar to this team!

On Dhoni's influence on his partners:

It will be absolute conjecture to say that Dhoni's arrival influenced the way Hardik Pandya batted, but for someone who makes a living out of smoking spinners for sixes, to knock three singles off Adil Rashid in what would most certainly be the final over by a spinner, when 95 runs were required off 54 balls, defied logic. Pandya was 22 off 12 balls when Dhoni arrived; he scored 23 off the 21 balls he faced after that.

Unfair to pin that on Dhoni, they just bowled better to Pandya once the figured he was going deep and looking to bash everything down the ground.

It's partly on MSD because the pressure was let off the bowlers at one end and they could regain their composure. Not saying MSD going beserk would have absolutely meant that Pandya would still keep getting balls he could hit, but we saw in that very game what can happen if both batsmen are taking on the bowling. It's the difference between a bowling attack simply having a plan and being able to actually execute it.
