Weird that SL were still only 85-4 when he got out, but he got them out of a massive hole when the innings was going nowhere.

Roshan Mahanman played a good innings too, tho it says a lot about cricketer's fitness levels back then that he retired hurt after about 2 hours of batting. That SL sides was stacked batting wise too - Tillekeratne at 7, Dharmasena 8, Vaas 9.

That Aravinda innings was incredible. Counterattacking like that when the team is 1-2 takes enormous balls. Very overlooked innings when people talk about great WC knocks.

De Silva was clutch AF. Basically won the WC for Sri Lanka. One of the most underrated batsmen of all time and certainly Sri Lanka's best until Sanga came along.

Probably not as heartbreaking as 03 though. Rough couple of years to be an Indian fan 07-08 with that Australia test series win denied by the Symonds howler.

Yeah, '96 was by far the worst. Beating that Pakistan team (which was much better than us talent wise) to then being crushed by that Sri Lanka team just as we started getting our hopes up.. SL were terrific and deserved to win though.

In 2003 I never really had any hope that we'd beat Australia. We played some good cricket in that tournament, as we did in 2015. Played up to our potential which is all you can really ask for.

Sri Lanka had unbelievable self belief in 96 world cup. I remember reading Ranatunga's statement when the tournament had just started that all others teams will be stunned to see us lift the trophy. I found it laughable. But that's exactly what happened.

2003 I was with a whole bunch of family and friends who were all excited for this glorious second world cup win, while I was the one who just sat there and kept interrupting them from time to time telling them we have basically no chance.

1996 I actually cried like Kambli. Genuinely gut wrenching especially with the crowd stuff at the end.
