It could be the groove is deeper on the zing stumps out of some technical necessity, or if the stumps are made of plastic, they might be more plastic (in the adjective sense) and therefore absorb the shock of being hit better than the more rigid wood. A bit like how hitting a ball with the splice sends more shockwaves into the rest of the bat than being hit on the meat (in this analogy the splice is the wood and the meat the plastic).https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cricket...zing-bails-latest-hit-miss-cricket-world-cup/
"“The zing bails perform exactly as the regular ones and, in fact, are lighter than those used by umpires when it is windy,” an ICC spokesman said. “The lights make any movement more noticeable.”
The zing bails used at the World Cup weigh somewhere between a light bail and a heavy bail, which would be used for high wind."
Maybe it's not the weight of the bails then.
Can some science nerd explain how the stumps now being made of plastic (and having a camera built into them) may affect things?
This.Could just be confirmation bias
I'm guessing probably not. There was that time when Saqlain bowled the ball through the stumps, and Matt Prior maybe? survived one against NZ a few years ago.Do we have any stats about bail dislodgability pre and post zing?
So like the 2015 WC?Imagine the final and the side chasing have a matchwinning 100 by a player who would have been bowled on 10 but the bails stayed on?
Could be a bit of a mess really.
This makes four including the warm up game doesn’t it?England v Bangladesh, 8/6/19
45.3 Stokes to Mohammad Saifuddin, no run, bowled him ... no, the bails have stayed on! Down the leg side, under-edged into the crease, hops up into the timbers and despite an audible clunk of wood, the wicket remains intact!
