11th over: South Africa 51-2 (de Kock 29, van der Dussen 1) Adil Rashid comes into the attack. His fifth ball bowls de Kock - but the bails stay on. That was bizarre. de Kock underedged a sweep onto the outside of the off stump, and the ball ran between Buttler’s legs and away to the boundary. The bails were not dislodged, so de Kock survived and got four bonus runs.

Starc to Gayle, no run, given out but Gayle reviews immediately! Fullish length on fourth stump angled in, Gayle is late driving as there was a definite noise when it passed the stumps... because the ball has in fact shaved off stump. A little peck! The baby smooch! Not a full pucker to dislodge the bails though. Incredible!

Is there any actual documentation on how much the Zing bails weigh in comparison with normal wooden ones?

Maybe it's not the weight of the bails then.

It could be the groove is deeper on the zing stumps out of some technical necessity, or if the stumps are made of plastic, they might be more plastic (in the adjective sense) and therefore absorb the shock of being hit better than the more rigid wood. A bit like how hitting a ball with the splice sends more shockwaves into the rest of the bat than being hit on the meat (in this analogy the splice is the wood and the meat the plastic).

I'm guessing probably not. There was that time when Saqlain bowled the ball through the stumps, and Matt Prior maybe? survived one against NZ a few years ago.

45.3 Stokes to Mohammad Saifuddin, no run, bowled him ... no, the bails have stayed on! Down the leg side, under-edged into the crease, hops up into the timbers and despite an audible clunk of wood, the wicket remains intact!

Stumped: Finch says Zing bails 'take a bit of force' to dislodge

Australian captain Aaron Finch says teams will just have to take the "good with the bad" should the high-tech cricket bails used at the World Cup deny a team a wicket.

There have been three instances in the opening week of the tournament where the ball brushed the stumps, only for the 'Zing' bails to not be dislodged.

This makes four including the warm up game doesn’t it?

Very strange. I mean sure we’ve seen it happen before but not with this alarming frequency.

It’s not just the frequency (although we haven’t looked at a proper comparison with normal bails) but the manner of the incidents. I’ve seen a few cases of the ball just sort of dribbling back into the stumps and not removing the bails, but can anyone think of a time it happened with clean bowled?

I think last night's one (England vs Bangladesh) is similar to the ones we used to see that wouldn't dislodge the bails, like howe's example of

the fact of the matter is the zing bails address an issue that didn't require fixing, and has probably broken something in the process
