They had the winning of the game with the bat. They were comfortably in control. Got to give credit to Finch here by doubling down on bowling out both Starc and Cummins. Basically dared the Windies to play them out and sweat on the two Stoinis and one NCN overs later. Upped the pressure and they fell for it by trying to keep the rate up. Was awesome captaincy - ballsy, high risk and a little bit counter-intuitive, because he'd have been tempted with that many runs in play to have bowled out the lesser bowlers and left it to his top two to bowl out on a lower margin for error.

And Starc. Genuinely fantastic spell at the end. Fast, full and reverse tang. Hard to deal with.

moral of the story - never bowl 47569 crappy medium pacers after you reduce a top order to match sticks.

finish them

Yep, this. In the absence of a wicket taking spinner, I'd say we're better off replacing Carlos with Gabriel, the fastest and nastiest of the lot.

Probably a good idea not to bowl about 20 odd wides too. And frankly they were lucky they weren’t called for more.

Down side to the strategy I guess

Yeah the margins are very fine, there are bound to be s few sides of we keep this up. At least we have some sort of a plan with the ball for once. Long may it continue.

It’s also very entertaining. So much better than relying on multiple nuffy finger spinners as your front liners like the effeminate nations do.

It's our strength TBF, they're all tall as well. We've just spent 2 years hardly taking a wicket whilst the likes of kesrick Williams rack up the caps. The quality of our side has risen fairly sharply in the last 6 months.

The batting needs more games though. Talent to burn but not enough game awareness.

Yeah Russell needs filleting after that shot. It was diabolical.
Carlos was crap too, Hety needlessly run out, Pooran always gets himself out near 50. They'll both learn though, whereas Carlos is just average.

Ballsy performance by Aus. The kind to bring a team together in an attritional environment like this. There were so many times in this match when they could've royally **** themselves, but they held it together.
They owe a lot of that to Smith. Him being a rock who never looked like getting out meant that they could still attack from the other end, even though they were 5-down so early. There was no lull in the innings so they made 280+ rather than struggling to 230-240 which you would have expected.

At least NCN had the grace to say he wouldn't be shocked if he was dropped next game

All I wanted was to laugh at the Aussies at the WC and it is looking as if #6 is on the way :(

If they had just played out that Starc over instead of going for glory. Am certain that is what a certain MSD would have done. Stoinis has two overs left FFS.

Don't ever leave us again Smitteh.

This was such an important win for Australia. It means we're more likely to scrape through to the finals despite not having a great side.

NCN was excellent with the bat but like the other two backup quicks he's not a very good bowler. Stoinis is just not great quality. Carey looked good last night but has a poor track record.
