I know his run-outs were crucial in the 1975 final, but to say a batsman who didn’t reach 20 in the tournament literally won WI the WC is excessive.
Still doesn't change the fact that Viv>> Lara any day of the week. He won them the wc in 79 then. Happy?

isn't one of the reasons he hasn't played abroad as much is the fact that he is so completely toothless that he gets dropped?
He is no Warne or Murali. He is being compared to Kumble. Kumble debuted in 1990 and pretty much looked toothless till 2002. That is 12 freaking years. People do improve over a period of time. I am not even saying Ashwin will do it, but if he keeps getting dropped after looking toothless for a test or two, it also means he has got less chances in comparison to Kumble who was given a rather long rope 2 decades back.
There are a few other reasons apart from Ashwin's ineffectiveness for him getting dropped.
1) Kohli has a tendency of chopping and changing his sides too often, some of his decisions moronic(not playing Bhuvi in one of the tests in SA). He has some record of not playing the same side again if I remember correctly.
2) Jadeja is pretty much another spinner in the Ashwin mold. Good lower order batsman, destructive spinner on helpful tracks. They get rotated.
3) Ashwin's fitness is dodgy. One aspect where Kumble and Jadeja are clearly ahead of him.

Right, here's what I've got doing it this way for the top 8:
Aus
bat: Bradman
ar: Miller
wk: Gilchrist
pace: McGrath
spin: Warne
Eng:
bat: Hammond
ar: Botham
wk: Knott
pace: Trueman
spin: Laker
India
bat: Tendulkar
ar: Kapil
wk: Dhoni
pace: ?
spin: Kumble?
NZ
bat: Williamson
ar: Hadlee
wk: Parore
pace: Hadlee
spin: Vettori
Pak:
bat: Miandad
ar: Imran
wk: Bari?
pace: Wasim
spin: Saqlain
SA:
bat: Pollock
ar: Kallis
wk: Waite
pace: Steyn
spin: Tayfield
SL:
bat: Sanga
ar: ?
wk: Chanders?
pace: Vaas
spin: Murali
WI
bat: Richards
ar: Sobers
wk: Dujon
pace: Marshall
spin: Gibbs

It rather breaks down where the one is the clear best in two categories (e.g. Hadlee), there is no clear candidate (e.g. a Sri Lankan all-rounder, unless I've forgotten someone) or there is a large gap between the best in one category and a 'replaceable' category (like WI and SA clearly having much better pace than spin bowlers). Also I couldn't decide a pace bowler for India. Many would still say Kapil, Srinath has a worse record, Nissar didn't play that much, Bhuvi is a personal favourite of mine but can't get in the team, and I think Bumrah might end up being the best but his career's very young. Also could go Barnes for Trueman for England.
One issue with this is that you only have to the best(or arguable best) in your discipline to make it ahead of more deserving candidates from another discipline. For eg; Kumble makes it ahead of Gavaskar or Dravid. Or Gibbs ahead of Lara or Ambrose.

I find it odd that almost no one has McGrath ahead of Lillee when McGrath is almost universally considered the superior bowler on here and has finished ahead of Lillee on every ranking done here.

Many have picked Mcgrath ahead of Lillee here. Me too.

Ashwin faces far more competition for the overseas spinner's spot than Kumble ever did.

India will (and should) continue with their horses for courses policy. Not in the least concerned that it is going to make some Miyagis here very unhappy about his stats looking better because he does not play all the games. Also not in the least concerned that it is going to make many Ashwin fans very unhappy, also because he does not play all the games.

Yeah, as long as matches are won, who cares who plays. Not a fan of Ashwin, but some of the criticism about him seems a bit over the top especially when he adds value as an allround cricketer.

Kohli has not surpassed Dravid in tests. In fact, he is yet to be a test great.
He is definitely behind Kapil Dhoni and Sachin in ODIs.

Posted in some random order here. There can be arguments made in favor of any of them to be honest.

think he meant 10 different players.
If we have the best 5 for tests, and pick others for ODIs, it could look something like this.

Tests

Kapil
Tendulkar
Gavaskar
Kohli
Dravid

ODIs

Dhoni
Yuvraj
Rohit
Sehwag
Zaheer Khan/Ganguly

Bumrah and Kuldeep should get there in a few years.

Here is Kumble's record away from home during the period 1990-2001.

32 matches 106 wickets, average of nearly 40. Very lucky to play for that long abroad.

The figures are awful in Aus and (for some reason) in England. 3 tests, against arguably the greatest test side ever to grace the cricket field. Still Kumble could at least not bleed runs at one end.

And yes, Ashwin has more competition, for sure.
