All of the current England ODI batsmen are on the way to become potential ATG ODI greats at the end of their career.

Couldn’t be further from the truth. Teams batting first have scored 350 or more on 116 occasions and it’s been chased down 9 times.
Yep. But have a feeling that the chasing teams got very close on many other occasions. Also, I guess 350+ scores by teams batting first and 300+ by teams chasing have increased a lot compared to the previous decade.

Feelings aren't always true.

If we look at since the last World Cup there's been 41 teams scored 350 or more batting first. 5 times it's been chased down and once the team batting second have won under DLS. Of the other 35 times, 4 times has the team got within 20 runs (6, 12, 13 and 15) with 5 more within 50, 6 more within 100 and the other 20 occasions being more than 100 runs away.

With numbers like that 350 is nowhere near as chase-able as thought - I suspect it's because the chases are more memorable they stick in the memory more than the failures.

Big chases are more common than they used to be. Look up the records for biggest chases and most of them are recent (though that freak 2006 game still blows everything away).

But '350 is the new 250' is both a ludicrous exaggeration and a crotchety bit of old git nonsense. 250 hasn't been a good score for 35 years.

What?

I am pretty sure 250 was a very good score in the mid 1980s

Whilst chasing big scores is notably easier nowadays, you can't overlook just how well these English batters have learnt to make merry. No one else can do it as well.

I hate to blow your mind but the mid 1980s were 35 years ago.

The first 3 games in the 1983 world cup were 322 v 216ao, 338 v 288/9 and 333 v 286ao btw. Things haven't changed that much - though a lot more teams used to get bowled out.

They should remove 'Cricket' from the name and just call it 'The ICC World Cup'.

The last one was salvaged from being a total farce because of the games in New Zealand;
this one has no redemption at all other than one that may be provided by Messrs. Duckworth and Lewis..

The first three looked like anomalies more than anything. The rest of the WC saw 39 out of 54 scores of 250 and under, with plenty of <200s.
