South Africa team selection

According to Wikipedia, it's either a specified number of caps (which they don't specify...) or a valid work permit. Olivier possibly gets in on the work permit due to his previous county stint as he's only played 12 times for South Africa which might not be enough.
I remember seeing it somewhere. Think you just have to play 1 test and then I think it is 10-15 ODIs.

CSA offered him a 2 year central contract too.

That didn’t stop Ottis Gibson from voicing his unhappiness in a CSA release: “We are naturally disappointed with Duanne’s decision to sign a Kolpak contract.

“He has been a key feature for us this summer and was without a doubt one of our standout performers. We held several meetings with him regarding his future with the Proteas throughout the summer and even offered him a two-year contract.

“To see him cut short a promising international career is disappointing. Ultimately‚ it was a decision we could not control despite our best efforts.”

CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe was on the same page in the release: “We find it extremely disappointing that Duanne has taken this step after all the opportunities we have given him‚ particularly over the past season and going forward‚ to live his dream of being an international cricketer.

“He was upgraded to a national contract during the current season on the strength of his outstanding performances in our Test squad and we offered him a two-year contract which would have given him financial security through to the end of the 2020-21 season.

“He was not short of opportunity either as he played in all six Test matches against Pakistan and Sri Lanka during the current summer and was also considered for white-ball selection.

“If one looks at the bigger picture this is not good news for the global game either that a player who has just broken into the top 20 on the Test bowling rankings for the first time should opt effectively to bring down the curtain on his international career in favour of playing only in domestic leagues.”

Olivier‚ who leapt three places to 19th position in the rankings after the Sri Lanka series‚ was quoted as saying on the county’s site that the thought of moving his career to England had struck him while he was playing seven first-class matches as an overseas signing for Derbyshire last year‚ when he took 31 wickets at 21.48.

“I came over to the UK last year and thoroughly enjoyed my time playing county cricket‚” Olivier said. “I have since realised I could happily base myself there for the foreseeable future.

Would Frylinck qualify ? That is the thing. I think there are certain cap qualifications.

Morris prime candidate. Cook and de Bruyn maybe if they were in demand but probably not. Cook has been poor for Durham/Glamorgan and age. de Bruyn hasn't shown his true capabilities yet and may never but he would pile the runs on in county cricket alright.
Morris doesn't need to move with the big IPL contract he has. Could probably pick up a blast/CPL gig too.

The question has to be how often would he be playing when travelling with the SA team? He played as part of a 4 man pace attack, if we start picking Mulder would he be in the starting line-up. I would love to have seen him stay but I fully understand from a long-term basis why he left.

Especially since his initial foray into test cricket hadn't been all that impressive, so with Ngidi around and Nortje on the rise you can see why he might have thought that his chances at an international career were waning.

And it's not as much of a shock as Abbott, who appeared to have established himself as part of the limited overs team, so even if he hadn't been able to secure a test spot he would have probably still been playing regularly for South Africa.

Anyone worried about Markram ?
No. He is guaranteed his test spot. Will get his odi spot back either post wc or once the selectors remove the blinkers.

Very likely to the next captain as well.

See no reason for him to give it up.

There is a cricket agent actively looking to put players on county's doorsteps who seems to have a strong connection with Titans players. With the deadline fast approaching lets not be surprised if there is a shock or two.

The only player that would surprise me would be Markram as he is young, a potential SA captain and quite obviously a planned part of the SA setup. So his reason for leaving would not be money or job security it would be for personal living reasons. None of the others would surprise me, even Faf coming out and said he was retiring from cricket after the WC to join a county.

I worry about our talented young batsmen leaving, but their is little to be done about it, CSA have tried to increase salaries recently and are giving the players opportunities when they can, consistent in selection. Even with Olivier offering him a SA contract, but ultimately they don't have the money or ability to make promises that the counties can.

Aiden Markram can't even make the 5 allowed players for Titans selection. How is he even meant to make a play for the WC even if unrealistic.

Wouldn't blame him for not giving 2 ****s and looking after himself.

This would be about communication though.... it is very clear from CSA point of view of where they place Markram. I`m unsure what they have said to him regards the WC or future LO's after WC. So Markram is not a player that is sitting on the sidelines thinking am I going to get an opportunity to play for SA or not or what is my future in SA cricket? Unlike most other players.

That does not mean he does not get a good offer and takes it, but he would take it because he believes he has a better life in Eng (or wherever) not because he does not have opportunity in SA; whereas most other players may think they will not have opportunity to break into SA setup and may decide to head away.

He is 12th man in a domestic game and he shouldn't be all because of CSA and government rules. I would be pissed off. That is why I say good luck to those who look after themselves. Not selfish one bit and CSA can't be angry.

I would be surprised if Markram left, not that I would blame him. I never said it would be selfish or that CSA has the right to be angry. It is what it is, a complex difficult situation. People get to make their own life decisions. And I am very anti-nationalism, I don't believe any of the bullshit regards having to play for the country you where born in etc. You take the opportunities you've got and make the best of them wherever that may lead you.

So if Brexit goes through, could those Kolpak clauses all be declared void by the ECB (and revert to a specific number of foreign players regardless of type) or challenged by CSA (although it already feels like they violate the spirit of Kolpak in any case, which was that players in EU-aligned nations count the same as locals from a work point of view, which is the opposite of how it is being applied.)

Signed before the law was changed so binding till the contract expires. Won't be able to renew via the kolpak route thought.
