ODI ATG XIs

State Captain
Glen Chapple batting a bit high
Oops. Make that greg chappell is batting a bit low. He's in there as an afterthought/placeholder though. That top order is lacking in proven ability to force the pace in modern terms, but i cant think of anyone good enough. Might be worth dropping Sanga for Buttler and promoting chappell.

Boult in for Mills now, surely?

The problem is who takes the new ball? Boult and Hadlee followed by Bond for me.

Can't believe had many amendments I'd make to your English team.

Both Bairstow (48 @ 105) and Buttler (39 @ 117) make England's greatest ODI side, even based on their relatively short careers. If fact Bairstow & Trescothick would be my openers.

Flintoff is an absolute no-brainer, someone who makes some people's world XI, how you'd leave him out is beyond me. If you wanted he and Botham, you replace DeFreitas.

Symonds adds so much to an ODI XI it’s almost impossible to leave him out. Should be considered for World XIs also

Symonds, Klusener, Kapil & Flintoff are all reasonable arguments for that World XI batting all-rounder spot at 7 or 8.

I'd never bat Symonds below 7. The other three are bowling all rounders and are different in that regard.

Symonds has to basically play as your fifth bowler, sharing the overs with Viv in an AT XI.

Not sure Symonds is the best no.7 in ODI history. I'd need to think more about that.

I do take your point that he's the best of those others when it comes to batting alone, but the other 3 were all good enough to bat 7, and Flintoff and Kapil in particular were excellent ODI bowlers, two guys you'd bank on their full quota of 10 overs.

Something like:

Gilchrist
Tendulkar
Richards
Kohli
DeVilliers
Symonds
Kapil
Wasim
Garner
Murali
McGrath

Symonds, Viv and AB are all absolute elite fielders.

I prefer;

Jayasuriya 6
Tendulkar
Kohli
Viv
ABDV
Dhoni+
Flintoff 5
Wasim 1
Ambrose 2
Garner 3
Murali 4

Jayasuriya is underrated, averaging 35 as an ODI opener and a mid 90 SR in spite of playing from '93-11. On top of that he his left-arm spinners as a 6th bowling option could be invaluable on the right deck, given you only have one spinner in Murali.

Gilchrist would be in if not for Dhoni, but in that line-up I think there's better value having Dhoni at 6 than Gilchrist opening, when Jayasuriya gives you the same with the bat, but the extra bowling option.

Love that sides' bowling attack too.

Hadlee and McGrath both unlucky...

Sehwag in ODI ATG team really? When you've got Rohit sitting out? Pull the other one

I really don't like an Australian XI without either Bevan or Symonds.
They'd be in most World ATG XIs, leaving them out of Australia's is very questionable to put it mildly

5 ODI world cups and twice runners up out of 11 but you don't have a single Australian in your team.
I think a team with only Australians would likely beat any made up team that doesn't have the same team spirit.

Agreed.
Tom Moody replaces Wasim Akram in my 11 .

Kapil is actually a really good fit for the finisher role 7. His SR for his era is remarkable, even better than Viv's.

His batting seems less reliable than Klusener and Watson and Symonds though. He's probably a good choice if Pollock is at 8.
Kapil is the best Indian ODi batsman of 1980s based on rankings .

Surprised to see , no one considering Lara as opener in ODis , he was the greatest opener ever , before Tendulkar taking that position .
