athlais morphed into a dirty knee jerker. never believed in nicholls, now piling on the bloke who hasn't bowled in ages after one poor game. he'll probably vote new zealand first next.

I'm with Athers on that. I've got reservations with Henry in white-ball cricket, especially on flat-wickets where his consistent short of a length deliveries become cannon-fodder for good attacking batsmen. I especially don't like him as a T20 option, and as Hesson pointed out today, he's only really been effective with the brand new ball in ODIs to date.

If anything I'd prefer to see Matt Henry with the red ball, behind our current 3 pace-men, and Lockie Ferguson.

Yeah I think Henry is probably New Zealand's second best new ball bowler in ODIs but he's almost useless outside that period. That's fine if you've got lots of allrounders and can cover him not bowling ten, but if means he really needs to consistently take wickets in that role to justify a spot, particularly given NZ are struggling a bit to find the right guys to be the fifth/sixth bowlers and bat 6-7.

I don't really agree with Athlai that NZ have more interesting ODI prospects in domestic cricket but his actual criticisms of Henry are valid. I might be more inclined to have a fit Milne as the fast bowling reserve at the World Cup even if he is just a fast Gavin Larsen, as he covers more roles.

Splendid comeback from Neesham. Was probably happiest about his performance with the ball than anything else. His talent with bat in hand has never been in question.
I was at the game and thought he looked like the quickest on show today, what’s speeds was he hitting? This was difinatley the hardest I’ve ever seen him run in, usually he sort of just lumbers in like he was just going to roll his arm over. He was quite impressive.

He was up to 140. Definitely looked like he'd stepped it up - from his most recent NZ appearances, at least. Maybe in the further-back past he's been at those levels as well.

That’s 20 innings opening the batting for NZ for Munro, he averages 24.......

If he doesn’t fire in this series surely he’s gone right?

At fastest, 138-141. But Boult was 140-143 and Ferguson 145-148 at quickest

I'd be tempted to give Latham another shot at opening in ODIs ...he was developing quite well there, I thought, until they gave him the gloves as well. He averages 38 at a strike rate of 82 opening, not awful.

Congrats to NZ on test series (sorry I been away a while) and also on today's win..I was fairly happy with our batting performance though- although we lost, 326 is a decent response..would have hoped for more from TP and also Asela but the latter has been away from this level for a while. Would like to see Shanaka replace Chandimal for next game and also Kumara for Pradeep- personally I don't get why Pradeep was dropped from tests as I feel he is better suited to that format..

Good win for NZ. New selectors for Sri Lanka. Sweeping changes in the team. Looks like Dhanushka played to secure his place. Glad with KJP and Dikka's knocks. Mendis is definitely having problems against the spinners. Asela was not in greatest form after the injury. Why he was selected.? IMO Kasun Rajitha should play in place of Pradeep

The problem with henry isn't that he had one bad game, it's that he bowls 135 seam up without any swing or variation. There's a pretty low ceiling on how successful that sort of bowling can be in modern ODIs. He needs to do two out of the following three to be a long term prospect:
a) put on 10kph
b) rediscover his outswinger
c) Improve his slower ball

Athlai

Not Terrible
I also didn’t knee jerk Henry, I never particularly rated him. Nor was I ever especially critical of Nicholls, I even once compared him to a young Ross Taylor which is basically the highest praise possible.

henry had his outswinger last time he bowled in nz (i don't remember the uae odis) but for the outswinger to work there has to be swing around. no one swung the ball last night.

if we give a bloke one game to prove himself after 2 months of no cricket then we are trash, especially when we've completely dropped the ball with developing our bowling stocks post-2015 wc. jamieson, kuggs and tickner might be ready, but in the nz a games they got carted as often as they succeeded.

he used to be consistently 140-145 in his first spell so im going to attribute the lack of speed to rustiness. he's always been a **** death bowler.

they were also all terrible last night, neesham and maybe sodhi excepted. boult has been up and down all season and last night wasn't good.

you don't get to duck out of this one. even if you did say that you were as fast as the rest of this lot to call for his dropping.

I absolutely hope I'm wrong on this one. Either way I agree he should get this and the bangladesh series now that we've picked him.

@ albi - i agree. if last nights performances continue then henry can't go to england. need to see rapid improvement because henry at his best is the third bowler picked after boult and santner.

halfway through the indian series we'll want to know who our final 15 are.
