For a side that has had big hitters, but for a couple of years now, not* big hitters that can go from ball 1, that's amazing for Neesham to come out and play like that. Do it a couple more times this summer, perhaps with CDG doing the same, and we'll feel a lot better about that lower order.

I just can't see the value of having an opener who throws the bat at everything aimlessly with no intention of being at the crease beyond the 20th over. It can work when you are chasing a low total, but in the day and age of 320+ scores, 32 off 14 doesn't mean a great deal imo.

The more players that are capable of dropping anchor and scoring tons, the better.

I personally think there's no room for Nicholls and Latham in the World Cup XI, rather have Latham at 5, Neesham at 6, CdG at 7, Santner at 8.

pretty sure nicholls opened for canterbury and seifert definitely opens for nd plus latham is a natural opener.

we might have 5 openers in the squad lol

I think if Latham or Nicholls opens Guptill has to change his game a bit. Which is fine, he's very capable of playing aggressively a bit earlier, but it'd certainly have to be a consideration if you were making the change so close to (or even during) the WC.

i think he'd be fine. munro can't seem to pick a slower ball at all and it's really getting to the point where we need to be ruthless.

on the evidence of today, even if it's only thisara perera, i'd like to see a 5-7 of nicholls-neesham-santa with latham opening (or seifert opening and latham at 5). give it the series and say the first 3 odis against india and see how we go

edit - rotate neesham and cdg in the structure above for a direct battle. i don't want to rely on either of their bowling in the world cup and i want 5 real bowlers.

I'm a big Seifert fan but his domestic 50 over performances have been so despicable across his career that it'd be hard for even me to justify his selection as anything more than a backup wicket keeper. He was picked early and he's had no set role but those mitigating factors can only get you so far from that record, and I think getting a go as a specialist top order bat is a bridge too far from there.

Latham or Nicholls opening are definitely options IMO but it depends on how much they're willing to rock the boat with Guptill's current role.
