The problem with this discussion about giving Cummins the new ball is that doing so neuters one of Hazlewood or Starc. Both of which are far better with the new ball and some swing.

Cummins would be devastating with the new ball though.

That is a silly reason to not use your best bowler properly though. Its like the time I argued that Sachin should bat at 4 for India in ODIs coz Sehwag and Ganguly are best as openers and struggle in the middle order. You can't neuter your best weapon to help your next best.

Cowan is too self important. Thinks he's special because he's some 'woke' pseudo intellectual. Similar to Bob Murphy the AFL player. Everyone puts them on a pedestal because they're cricket/AFL players that sound intelligent enough to use a knife and fork.
