I wonder if Smith would be getting such a passionate defence if he had, say, Shaun Marsh's stats.

If he had Shaun Marsh's stats he wouldn't have been the captain....so either he would've been innocent or conclusively in on it rather than not doing enough to stop it as is real life. So moot point.

As it stands his main wrongdoing was not doing anything to stop the cheating and taking the fall for it in a press conference. Had the latter not happened the punishments would likely be significantly lighter.

It makes him a **** leader and he shouldn't ever captain Australia again, but he clearly isn't as culpable as Warner or even Bancroft.
