Just had a look, has all the makings of a proper batsman and the lad can bowl as well... He'd be bloody good for future. Just need to make sure he doesn't lighten up on his bowling though and keeps working at it.

NZ has a terrible record of the promising early-maturing young bowler who can bat - they all get injured. Cairns, Oram, Anderson, there are many more. And many like Anderson or Franklin end up in the position where the batting would be a very good extra if they could also bowl, but it's not enough to justify NZ selection by itself, but every time they start bowling again they are rusty and then they're injured again anyway. And all the time our of the game can't help the batting either.

Clarkson the most recent predecessor to Smith in this regard - he bowled very nice outswing and now he doesn't seem to bowl at all.

So cross your fingers and toes that by some strange magic, Smith avoids major injury that ruins his bowling.

The lad already spent most of last season out injured, I think in that time he did a whole lot of work on his batting. But it's how organised he is at the crease that impresses me, only a couple of rash shots and he seeks to collect runs easily.

Rippon opens the batting quite often, doesn't he Cribb. They've brought in Lockrose for Rutherford, so I'll wait until any Rippon makeshift gig is confirmed, maybe execute a crafty 'bet max, cash out' trick. I could let some of the wager ride out, too. Scoring runs in the last month.

Yeah Clarkson is all class. I don't think with him around we'll be heading into the 2023 World Cup without a power hitter.

Bowes' hundred makes him second highest scorer after Fletcher too.

2 hours ago ND was winning the battle of the returning NZ A players, Kuggs 75* (57), no wickets for Ferguson or Munro, then 2 early wickets for Kuggs ....

A reminder that Munro is a matchwinner in white ball format.

Nice to see Finn Allen with a confidence boosting century for Auckland A.

Finn Allen putting our boys to sword with a near double. I think he would have scored 300 if they didn't declare. Great to see. He has it in him to score big 100s which is great to see. Hope he can make to to the Aces on the back of this knock. Aces don't have outstanding options at the moment anyways. As for our Wellington boys, disappointing at Basin the top order has failed twice. Rakitha Weerasundara and Troy Johnson in particular. Both can bat but repeated failures and likes of Jacob Bhula etc scoring runs for firebirds will mean another season goes where they miss out. Basin won't be minefield at any stretch and looks like spinners have taken most wickets. Bizzare thing is that they batted 12, that is so village for a provincial A game.

I was thinking looking at a couple of Duffy wickets from earlier this season that he was starting to look quite good again - nice shape and decent pace. Then, I looked at his cricinfo pace and was shocked by a couple of things:

a) How young he still is - only 24, but it feels like he's been round the scene forever; and
b) how good his List A average is (66 wickets at 23 - even if his ER is a bit high at 5.3).

Another player to add to the NZA list.
