*Official* Pakistan v New Zealand in the UAE 2018

Sounds like a tremendously exciting passage of play much as it us painful to follow an NZ collapse (and NZ not helping themselves too). Pity about Kane 's dismissal, him combating Hasan Ali and Abbas' reverse would be unmissable viewing I imagine.

There's been reverse and there's been spin. The galling thing will be when our bowlers don't get the same.

Does Watling's grinding method actually work for him in Asia? Off the top of my head I think not, I think his average would be a fair bit lower there than elsewhere.

Yeah he averages less than 30, even accounting for the fact that he averages 87 in Bangladesh.

The 2014 Aus/NZ series was the start of a innings for Misbah's test team - the personnel had changed quite a bit from the 2012-13 period. Sarf's captaincy today feels like the start of his new innings as Test captain. There were sessions in the Australia series when it felt like Sarf was losing hold of the match and looked out of ideas. Today he has been spot on and never really let go of the game. Most importantly he embraced Misbah's choke hold and never gave Williamson easy runs even when he was set. There's a lot of how Misbah worked Root over in that Williamson dismissal. Deprive him of runs even when playing well and make him play a release shot. Also you know Sarf is at the top of his game when he doesn't forget that he has a 5th option in Haris

Hrmm, averages just under 20 in both India and UAE after 4 tests each, highest scores of 25 and 42 respectively, while has never played a test in Sri Lanka. That certainly matches my impression that he hangs around for 40-80 balls but no longer.

Yeah he hasn't done that well (it's not a large sample size TBH) but part of the problem has been he has very often been left to bat with the tail very early on in his innings, and he needs a reasonably capable partner at the other end to be able to play his way and build a score (someone like a Mark Craig, with whom he has shared a couple of good stands).

Well this is all a bit **** isn't it?

This is what happens when you don't tour overseas for more than 2 years.

Meanwhile, these two have resisted Pakistan for more than 10 overs? That kind of a day.

EDIT: Yeah, that's on me.

Quite correct Bahnz. Although even a proper touring schedule might not have helped NZ in this scenario. You just can't beat these guys in the UAE.

150! And out.

Would be surprised if we get more than one wicket in the remaining session tbh - teams don't usually do well in the field after batting performances like this.

Full credit to Pakistan for this effort, going by the comments the surface hasn't been batting-unfriendly and appears to be a good toss to have won.
