That and Steyn going at 32 against England compared to McGrath's worst of 27 for any team. McGrath being better away and having tougher home conditions too.
Tangentially related but Marshall's highest average against any team is 23, which is part of why many consider him the GOAT.

Wow. This is a big surprise. Both McGrath and Ambrose, 2 favourites of CWers, ranked lower than expected. Steyn breaking in top 5 is huge. Barnes -- well it's hard to tell where he might finish given the unique era he played in.
Barnes is either the Bradman of bowling or extremely lucky.

Hadlee beats the 3 fast bowlers CW rated ahead of him!

Who do we think will be the greatest fast bowler according to this methodology? Steyn or Hadlee? (leaving out Barnes as the ambiguous case)

Hmm... Only 783 quality points for McGrath; that is a bit a of a surprise.
Perhaps the model does not adequately reward his amazing consistency; his troughs were not much lower than his peaks.

I'm fine - actually quite pleased - that Steyn is being rated above McGrath even on pure statistics; I've always rated Steyn higher.

Scenes when Steyn comes top of all the fast bowlers.

Amazed Warne managed to be higher up than McGrath, but hey ho.

This benefits Steyn in this analysis. You get more heavily rewarded for a spectacular and a mediocre performance than two excellent ones if I'm understanding correctly.

Steyn should actually be a long way ahead in a lot of categories here. Era adjusted, strike rate, PPI (both through competition for wickets and his explosiveness in individual innings), peak 50.

I feel like Hadlee should be beating Steyn. But the fact that Hadlees team lost so often will count against his PPI, so I'm not sure. Plus there is the fact that from peer comparison I could see Steyn sitting comfortably ahead of Mcgrath in this analysis, but it's hard to picture Hadlee beating Marshall by so much.

Anyway, Warne next is my prediction. His average and SR have to drag him down a fair bit even though he will finish second on career points.

In the batting analysis, Tendulkar ended up surprisingly low too. I've always found his consistency similar to McGrath's.

Career: 1993-2007
Wickets: 560
Gold Performances: 5
8/38 vs. England at Lord's 1997 (16.77)
6/17 vs. West Indies at Brisbane 2000 (15.95)
8/24 vs. Pakistan at Perth 2004 (21.85)
5/53 vs. England at Lord's 2005 (15.68)
6/50 vs. England at Brisbane 2006 (16.68)
Silver Performances: 19
Bronze Performances: 14

Overall Average/Strike-Rate/Points Per Innings: 20.98 (21.69) 53.90 (52.04) 5.03 (rank 12)
50 Innings Peak Average/Strike-Rate/Points Per Innings (1999-2002): 17.76 51.01 5.65 (rank 18)
Non-Home Average/Strike-Rate/Points Per Innings: 20.07 50.60 5.30 (rank 9)
Quality Opposition Average/Strike-Rate/Points Per Innings: 20.05 50.99 5.33 (rank 7)

All bowlers in the top 10 have something special about them. For Glenn McGrath, it is his faultless record. Across all criteria he averages under 21. Only Mohammad Abbas has the same achievement, but he has only played 10 tests. Throw in 560 wickets for McGrath and you can see why cricket writers and forum posters like Burgey wax lyrical about him. McGrath just got you out. He wasn't quick, he didn't swing the ball a mile, and he wasn't showy, but he got good batsmen out time and again over 14 years. In my opinion, he was the main reason Australia stayed at no.1 for so long. He certainly made Warne's life easier by consistently taking wickets at the top of the order. And Australia could have scored a million runs every game but without McGrath's wickets they wouldn't have won as many tests.
Am I seeing a pattern? Consistent bowlers lack a lot of gold performances, but have tons of silver and bronze ones (Compare to Harbhajan)

I consider the guy in your Avatar as the best cricketer since 1990. (And Imran the best since 1970)
Migara at it again with his well known anti-lanka/Murali bias. Murali easily wins best bowler for me. Maybe best cricketer, but Kallis gives him a run. Not enough longevity from Gilchrist, or he'd have a big claim.

Going further back, Imran takes best cricketer, easily. Best cricket player, I'm not sure. Hadlee, Murali, Kallis, Imran all in with a shout
