McGrath. Wafg. Still love that footage of him getting Warner in that T20 after he’d retired. Just sums up his method in about two minutes

I'm serious. McGrath had singularly unimpressive figures of 1-51 in a relatively low scoring match in which Pollock took 5-36 and Donald 4-32, so it's not like the conditions weren't favourable for him either. It was Warne who turned the match after McGrath was easily handled by the openers, and the only wicket he wound up taking was Boucher, far from being one of South Africa's main batsmen; Contra your claim of him taking out the opposition's main batsmen in important matches.

And "nearly" only counts with horseshoes and hand grenades champ. Otherwise we would be discussing how, Klusener "nearly" won South Africa the match, with McGrath being ineffective and expensive in a must win game and choking when it mattered the most. :D
Did he get anyone out in 03 final, just out of interest? Or the 07? I don’t know that he bowled all that well in the 96 final but can’t recall. I think he may have got a couple in 99.

I know it’s only a small sample size of four WC finals (winning three), compared to other players who took their teams to so many more.

Oh.

Was genuinely shocked seeing that. Wasn't expecting Steyn ahead of McGrath. Not that I'm complaining given he's basically my favourite player ever.

I think he got some choker out in 03:p, but that was already after Australia had scored 359/2 batting first. India were never going to get that. Same thing in 07, Australia batted first and got a huge total. Easy peasy after that. In 99 Warne did all the heavy lifting while in 96 he got tonked around by De Silva and co.

Anyway my point merely was that his contributions there was hardly as decisive as the revisionist mythology would have it. That's all, no need to get bent out of shape and strain your gout over it, old man. :p

Nothing I said is factually incorrect.

Making your usual contribution I see.
Nothing incorrect, no. Just typically tendentiously slanted. I especially like the bit about "tougher home conditions", when most away batsmen were giving "rabbit in the headlights" performances in Australia during his time. His best performance of 8-24 vs Pakistan in Perth being a prime example.:D

Yeah, you're not very good with the facts thing, I suggest you leave it to people who actually watch cricket rather than just bring up little anecdotes without context.

Did you ever think that maybe the rabbit in the headlights performances were because McGrath was a brilliant bowler?

Australia's greatest bowler, the bogan from Victoria did good. Warne's magic is reflected in the results of this analysis. He may not have the lowest set of averages, but his PPI, especially during his peak and against quality opposition, is outstanding. And his number of medal performances are only bettered by Murali. And like Tendulkar, Warne really had two peaks, from 1992-1994, where he took 157 wickets in 30 matches (21.74 62.44 5.69) and again from 2002-2005 when in another set of 30 matches, he took 193 wickets. The initial coming-of-age changed the face of cricket, and all of a sudden kids were rolling their arms over in a leg-spin action in the backyard. The comeback to once again scale the mountain of greatness sealed his place in the top 5 of this analysis and confirmed his legend.

The highest-ranked bowler who has played the entirety of their career in the 21st century, we are only recently beginning to understand Dale Steyn's greatness. His lowest ranking in all criteria is no.13. And in an era of bigger bats, roped in boundaries, and flat wickets he is head and shoulders ahead of all other fast bowlers. There may be some reservations about him playing his home matches in South Africa, but three of his gold performances are away from home and those efforts put him on the map. Also, if I was to account for the lower RPW in South Africa, I would also have to factor in the higher RPWs in other countries. In addition, of all the bowlers in the top 10, he has played the highest percentage of matches against quality opposition (63 out of 88 tests). He has the highest number of gold performances for any pace bower in the history of the game, and the lowest strike-rate apart from Fred Trueman of those quicks who have taken more than 200 wickets.

Injuries have started to hinder his time on the field and it is hard to see him playing many more tests. We may not truly appreciate his greatness until he is gone.

Think you've copied the peak years from Warne (unless it's just a typo of 2012-2015). Only bring it up cause I'm genuinely curious as to what his best 50 innings period actually was.

Steyn has been my favourite player since basically 2008 when I first started to really follow all international cricket, not just matches involving England. Pretty surreal ten years later to look back and realise he's clearly top ten ever in his field and maybe even top 3/5. Really hope he has one more gun series left in him.
