Lol Fmd they made Uppal captain of the second XI side. In a ****ing dirge of a start to the summer for Australian cricket, this is the absolute pits.

Very glad to see Lloyd Pope in line for his FC debut, by all accounts he was really getting some good rip on them in the Futures League game. The batting on the other hand looks pretty light, they pretty much have to play Valente at 7 to avoid an absurdly long tail. On balance I am really not optimistic

That's former South Australian #3 batsman Kane Richardson that you've got down at 10, there.

Yeah I remember that, another one of Darren Berry's more "interesting" ideas. In all seriousness though he would definitely bat ahead of the Chadd if he plays

He's playing for Fairfield this week against Parra.

Interesting* they picked Sangha. Weird how you can get fast-tracked. Jack Edwards was always going to play after his JLT heroics, but the bloke has a first grade average of 12.

The people demand Bertus.

*Ridiculous.
Why's Sangha particularly interesting/ridiculous? Seems like he's got the Grade runs behind him over the past season, at least.

But yeah, really do need some #Bertmentum in the side.

It's just there's blokes churning out stacks of runs and have been for a few years, but you know, yoof.

Yeah fair enough. I can cop Sangha given that he has Grade runs behind him. But picking a guy with a First Grade average of 12 is not great.

Really rated Sangha's knock against England in that tour game for the record, looked thoroughly comfortable at the crease. But I definitely understand Burgey's point, must be tough to be making consistent runs at grade level yet be overlooked in favour of players with more supposed "potential" for the future

Dunk was terrible in the Bash last year. Highlight was his bowling tbh. I don't think anyone is looking at him as a Bash player. Probably done.

Jack Edwards has to be picked. I don't care if a poor grade player has averaged 45 for 7 straight seasons, if he's not as likely to do as good a job as an 18 year old kid then he's not going to get picked regardless of how much he "deserves" it. Edwards smashed state-level bowlers all over the park during the JLT. He's probably in the best 5 or 6 bats in NSW regardless of age, deal with it.

I think this is the crux of the disagreement -- whether good First Grade numbers are a better indicator of likely Sheffield Shield success than good U19s and JLT Cup numbers, underpinned by **** grade numbers.

I don't think Burgey's advocating picking lesser players because they "deserve it" -- I suspect he genuinely believes they're better options.

My original post on this issue was meant to convey that Edwards' selection for the Shield is understandable given his JLT Cup success. Right place, right time and all that. Whether he should have been in the JLT Cup side or have a State contract to begin with is a different issue, but he's taken his chance so I can understand them picking him.

Who in NSW grade or Futures League deserves or might not Nick Larkin/Kelvin Smith up a gig in the batting anyway? Aside from your boy.

Yeah I'm more just talking about the Jack Edwards case. There's definitely been issues in the past with catapulting underprepared kids into representative teams ahead of seasoned pro's. I'm far from familiar with Sydney grade cricket, or grade cricket in general, or Sydney in general except the one thai place I always go to near the market in china town that has the best thai curries, but I have a hard time thinking that many of these Grade batsmen would have, or would, outperform this very talented kid.

I mean if the likes of Gibson and Larkin are anything to go by . . .

Was just looking at the stats over the last couple of seasons for Syd Grade and noticed David Dawson is still around. Makes you think.

But Josh Clarke has better numbers than most over his first couple of seasons. Any value in him?

Tough decision but id leave out Valente. The 4 other quicks deserve a game and Mennie is capable enough with the bat. I acknowledge that its a little risky but runs will have to come from the top 5.

Not a big deal but I think Lehmann and Cooper, plus Richardson and Sayers are switch around in the order.

Anthony Clarke still playing as well.
Reminds me of how Greg Matthews was still playing (and doing very well) in grade cricket up until he was 50.

EDIT: Turns out it wasn't first grade, I bet most Test cricketers if they wanted to could play like 3rd/4th grade well into their 50's...maybe even 60's. Still a cool fact though.
