Moooo
Jadeja is only 29 tons away
Can’t really say kohli deserved more centuries when he was dropped all the timeYea that's fair.
The rate at which Kohli and Smith are racking up centuries is quite something - everyone else around them who has scored ~25 centuries has played around about 1.5x or even 2x (Border) the amount of innings. Kohli really should have had a couple more from his England trip too.
Sobers, Chappell and Yousuf (and of course Bradman with 29) the only ones comfortably <1.5x what Kohli and Smith are going at.
Yeah so upset about Smith and this ban. His own fault obviously, but I'd have loved to have seen him have a go in UAE and India at home.Smith and Kohli have a good shot at 40 tons imo. I know only the elites get there and you can never know when the runs just dry up but these 2 are that good. The one year ban is a major setback for Smith in that sense. A year of his prime especially for someone who relies on his eye like he does.
Which is the proof to the fact that test wins require complete team effort always, the concept of a match winner will work in LOIs only.Kohli is replicating Ponting's 2001-2006 peak. He's a bit ahead of schedule compared to Ponting, but he might hit the downcurve a bit earlier too.
It's a shame we haven't managed to surround him with a couple of other quality batsmen, great individual performances but no away Test series wins (or even draws) to show for it.
No it's not too early to call. Maybe 3 years ago it was too early to call. Smh at potentially equating Smith with Voges.Very similar stuff from Kohli and Ponting early career. Good bats. More than good if you take experience into account. Then an explosion into awesome. My money is on Kohli not being able to sustain the carnage as long (can't be arsed to check records, but I did at some stage, and I think ponting was boss for about 7 years), but I doubt he will be rubbish like end career Ponting.
Smith is an entirely different beast. Voges or bradman in his recent performances; too early to call.
From those I'd say Smith and Kohli would be about a 90-95% chance of getting there, Williamson about an 80% chance (New Zealand's current slump in Tests isn't quite going to be the new status quo, the amount of Tests New Zealand will start to return to their usual level for at least the next few years, and he only just turned 28 so age shouldn't be much of a factor [I also feel like his game is better suited to an older age than Smith's or Kohli's but that is harder to say for certain]) and Root about a 30% one (if he does finally remember how to build an innings he could surge, but it's more likely he'll be around the 20-25 mark)Two years later:
Williamson: 18
Smith: 23
Kohli: 24
Root: 14
Smith and kohli have churned out hundreds like crazy and even if they go on a long Ponting-esque decline they should be able to get there. Williamson is still scoring tons but but not playing enough tests while he's in peak form will hurt his chances. And unless Root stops throwing it away with dumb shots it'll be tough for him. Might eventually get there by 180 tests or so.
Chandimal's nearly 30 though. Plus Sri Lanka don't play as much Tests as India/Australia/England which hurt (hell people are even questioning Williamson's chances who's a year younger and has seven more tons). Would struggle to get to 30 unless he has Chanderpaul-esque longevity.Lokuge Dinesh Chandimal has 11 tons now, and will get to 30 ton hopefully.
Plus there's Kusal Mendis who has potential to reach that calibre.
He still only needs two more which shouldn't be too hard to do if he plays for an extended period. Will depend on if he gives it up after the 2019 World Cup I guess.Doesn't look like Amla will get there.

Sanga had like 8 centuries before he was 29.Chandimal's nearly 30 though. Kusal Mendis is a decent bet from the younger players though. I really like his style.
Hope you're right. Would be nice to not have another side falling apart like the Windies.Sanga had like 8 centuries before he was 29.
Chandi is still 28 and has 11 centuries. Mind you Chandimal did most of his batting as a keeper. I feel like the next couple of years he will churn out hundreds and get close to 20 tons rapidly
Sanga is among the greatest batsman ever and had a golden period during his last years which outstripped the ending periods of batsman even better than him (who are few in numbers anyway.)Sanga had like 8 centuries before he was 29.

I think it's just Smith and Kohli who do that and who knows those two might be the second and third greatest batsman ever when they decide to hang up their boots. This era is definitely not any better for batting than early 00s.It seems like players churn out centuries quicker now. Maybe it is because they score quicker and get there more often before the good ball arrives or maybe it is because they play more and so have more tests to capitalise from during purple patches. My feeling is that an equal comparison is 30 centuries now is like 20 from the previous century - with, admittedly, no evidence to back this up - it's just the vibe.
Too soon to say really. A number of batsmen have hit hundreds on debut. He looks the goods but plenty of batsmen look good without accomplishing a great deal.Shaw will get there and then some.
